Using "Sentence Structure" with Lenormand

Today I’m doing an exercise I have seen in several places using one of my Lenormand decks. As an English major and writer, naturally I love working with parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc.) so this just sounds like fun to me.

INSTRUCTIONS
(1) Ask a question. Shuffle your deck and pull out 4 cards.
(2) The Adjective for card 1
(3) Subject for card 2
(4) Verb for card 3
(5) Adverb for card 4
(6) Interpretation in regards to the Question

My deck for this exercise is the Gilded Reverie Lenormand by Ciro Marchetti (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) I’m asking the cards what factors, issues, or forces I need to be aware of next week (January 20-26).

Adjective: MOON (32)

spiritual, emotional, mysterious, subconscious, romantic, creative

Subject: CROSS (36)

grief, burden, guilt, suffering, possible redemption, religion

Verb: MICE (23)

whittle away, destroy, gnaw, cause anxiety, cause doubt, lie

Adverb: PARK (20) 

publically, socially, harmoniously, pleasantly

INTERPRETATION: Next week, I need to be aware of deep, subconscious feelings of grief or guilt that cause anxiety or doubt, possibly in a social or public setting that is supposed to be pleasant and harmonious.

I can imagine one or two scenarios that would fit this description perfectly, but I’m not aware that any of those are taking place next week. It will be interesting to see what this might mean.

Lenormand Line of Five: New Apartment for Mom?

Once again I am exploring the issue of when an assisted living apartment might come open for my mother at the same facility where she currently has an independent living apartment. I did a reading in July that you can see _HERE_,  and a reading in August that you can see _HERE_.:

So far, the cards have basically hedged their bets by giving me a mixed Yes-No response. As in August, I am going to use a 5-card line I saw in Sylvie Steinbach’s book The Secrets of the Lenormand Oracle.

My question, once again, is "Will an assisted living apartment become available for my mother in the next 30 days?" This time, I am using The Under the Roses Lenormand by Kendra Hurteau and Katrina Hill (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.)

For this technique, I decide which card represents the issue being explored. The HOUSE card is typically used for issues related to moving or changing residence. I choose any card, at random, from the deck and turn it upright. I keep doing that until I pull the HOUSE card. I keep the two cards I pulled immediately before I drew HOUSE. Then I turn over two cards after that to create a 5-card line with HOUSE in the middle, and the two cards drawn immediately before and after HOUSE on either side.

I use the suit associations for my initial interpretation, with Red suits (hearts, diamonds) meaning "Yes" and black suits (clubs, spades) meaning "No."

Here is the result:

CROSSROADS…..TREE…..HOUSE…..CLOVER…..CROSS

This time, it appears that the answer is “probably YES” (four red cards, one black).
A crossroads will be reached, a time for personal growth and reflection that leads to a place where one is most comfortable, complete with good fortune and longevity, but not without worries or suffering.

Lenormand 5-card Line: New Apartment for Mom?

Today I’m revisiting the question of when an assisted living apartment might come open for my mother. I did a reading in July that you can see _HERE_ .

It appears that my Yes-Yes-No response from the Lenormand cards in that reading turned out to mean “NO.” (At least as far as I know… and I don’t know what might have been going on behind the scenes. It’s possible that something “almost” became available.)

Let’s see what the Dreaming Way Lenormand (artwork by Kwon Shina / U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) says in answer to the same question today: Will an assisted living apartment become available for Mom within the next 30 days?

Instead of a 3-card line this time, I am going to use a technique I saw in Sylvie Steinbach’s book The Secrets of the Lenormand Oracle. For this technique, I decide which card represents the issue being explored. The HOUSE card is typically used for issues related to moving or changing residence. I choose any card, at random, from the deck and turn it upright. I keep doing that until I pull the HOUSE card. I keep the two cards I pulled immediately before I drew HOUSE. Then I turn over two cards after that to create a 5-card line with HOUSE in the middle, and the two cards drawn immediately before and after HOUSE on either side. Here is the result:

SUN ….. ANCHOR….. HOUSE….. LADY ….. RIDER

The SUN card is always nice to see, as it typically represents optimism and success. Taken as an individual card the ANCHOR suggests to me that Mom is likely to be able to stay in the retirement complex where she currently lives, that it is her home. Therefore, if she needs to have an assisted living apartment, one will become available there.

Sylvie Steinbach interprets SUN plus ANCHOR as “legacy, long-term success, empire.” Her keywords for ANCHOR plus HOUSE are: “family estate, inherited family home, final residence.” That makes sense, and is also encouraging.

The LADY card, I think, probably refers to my mother. In fact “mother” is a keyword that Sylvie Steinbach offers for that card.

The RIDER card often suggests positive news and change, movement, and opportunity. Notice that the horse on this card is going in one direction, while the Rider faces the opposite direction. In the booklet that accompanies this Lenormand deck, Lynn Araujo writes: “Though the Rider looks back, she trusts her horse to carry her eagerly forward toward her destiny…” Both the LADY and the RIDER are looking “back” at the HOUSE, but the horse carries them forward, onward, and into the future.

Sylvie Steinbach’s keywords for HOUSE plus LADY: “housewife, landlady, real estate agent.” When asked her “occupation,” on a form, my mother always answers “housewife.” And, yes, she is very particular about how her house looks, the decorating, and so forth. It is much more than a “place” to her. It’s a very personal space.

And for LADY plus RIDER, Steinbach writes: “new relationship with an attractive man.” Well. I’m not so sure about that. Although, it doesn’t say “romantic relationship,” so perhaps this is another type of relationship, and the man just happens to be attractive. It will be interesting to see how that might develop.

If I use the formula I have used in other Lenormand yes-or-no readings, this group of five cards consists of three red (YES) answers and two black (NO) answers. Once again, a mixed bag, as if the cards are hedging their bets.

I have to say that I find it interesting that the question specifically mentions “the next 30 days,” and I pulled cards numbered 29 and 31. I don’t know what that means, it’s just interesting.

It’s time to admit that before I did this 5-card line, I did the same 3-card line I did a month ago to answer this question. I’m not going to share the whole thing here, but the yes-no ratio was two NO to one YES. And the ANCHOR was one of the three cards. I have to think it has special significance for my mother’s situation.

If I wanted to be whimsical, I would speculate that since it is card number 35, an assisted living apartment is likely to become available in 35 (not 30) days. But more importantly, I feel that this is telling us that Mom is likely to be able to stay where she is – in that retirement complex – rather than facing the need to move to an assisted living apartment in a completely different facility. (She and the family would prefer that she stay where she is.)

Lenormand 3-card Line: New Apartment for Mom?

Back in 2016, I had some interesting results doing a series of readings with the Lenormand cards concerning the possible timing of the sale of my mother’s house. These days, my mother is looking at moving from her independent living apartment into assisted living in a senior living community. Right now, there are no assisted living apartments available in the community she prefers, but Mom is at the top of a waiting list. I have also looked at an apartment in another community.

So my question today is: Will an assisted living apartment become available for Mom within the next 30 days?

As you may remember, cards from a red suit indicate "yes", whereas cards from a black suit indicate "no.") Let’s see what the Gilded Reverie Lenormand by Ciro Marchetti (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) can tell us.

(1) CHOICE (22) – Queen of Diamonds (red) = YES

(2) KEY (33) – 8 of Diamonds (red) = YES

(3) MOUNTAIN (21) – 8 of Clubs (black) = NO

The answer appears to be leaning toward “yes” with one “no” vote – MOUNTAIN – which, appropriately enough, represents challenges and obstacles, blockages and resistance. In addition to waiting for an apartment to become available, we are also faced with the possibility that Mom might not like the apartment that is available or “resist” moving there for whatever reason.

The CHOICE card (aka The Crossroad) is interesting because it suggests that there are options or choices. Is it possible that more than one apartment will open up within the next 30 days? I like that idea!

The KEY is also an interesting card to see here, as it commonly represents discoveries and solutions, but also makes me think of having the “key” to an apartment. This card tells me that there is a way to unlock the solution to this problem. (I am also intrigued by the appearance of this card here because we recently attempted to get the keys to Mom’s current apartment duplicated so that my sister could have a set. Local hardware stores do not have the correct blanks for these keys, and we were told we needed to go to a locksmith. Since we really are hoping to move her sooner rather than later, we decided not to go to the trouble and expense of having a locksmith do the keys.)

CHOICE + KEY is a promising combination (I am picturing Mom being handed two keys from which she can choose the apartment she prefers). Another interesting things about these two cards is that according to Sylvie Steinbach in her book The Secrets of the Lenormand Oracle, both CHOICE and KEY are linked with the planet Uranus (the unexpected). Could it be that one or more apartments will become available “unexpectedly” due to a sudden, unanticipated development in the life of the current resident(s)?

KEY + MOUNTAIN suggests delays, possibly controlled by fate (no surprises there). CHOICE + MOUNTAIN also represents delayed outcomes.

I am left feeling hopeful that indeed, something will open up within 30 days, ideally something that Mom will want to move into. (I realize now that I did not specify which community I meant when I phrased my question, but in my mind I meant to ask if something would come open in her current, preferrred community.)

Lenormand Line of Five: Relationship Reading

One of my current projects is rewriting the Lenormand class at The Magickal Circle School. In connection with that, I hope to do more Lenormand readings here at Tarot Notes.

A common method used by Lenormand readers is a line of five cards designed to answer a question. To do this type of reading, you can either decide ahead of time what your focus card will be or you can "let the deck decide" what the focus card will be. You then read the cards to the left of the focus card as past influences or what lead up to the situation. The cards to the right of the focus card look to the future of the situation.

Below is an example of a Lenormand 5-card line. The cards were drawn at random, letting the deck decide what the focus card would be. The deck was shuffled between card draws. I am using the French Cartomancy deck by Lo Scarabeo.

The question being asked is: What does Mary need to know about her next relationship?

Focus Card: DOG (18) - This card tells us that Mary needs to recognize how important friendship and loyalty are to her in a relationship. She needs and wants someone who is helpful, protective, and loyal to her.

Past: ANCHOR (35) and HEARTS (24) -  In the past, Mary wanted or had (or perhaps thought she had) a stable, safe relationship in which she and her partner were building a legacy together. From her perspective, this relationship was loving, romantic, and passionate. She was (or saw herself as) deeply emotionally involved, with her whole heart devoted to the relationship. (In the book The Secrets of the Lenormand Oracle, Sylvie Steinbach describes the Anchor/Hearts pair as "faithfulness, loyalty, unconditional love."

Future: COFFIN (8) and CHILD (13) - Looking towards the future, we see the strong possibility of important life alterations, a completion of a life cycle or period in Mary's life, the "end" of something. She may need to acknowledge that it's time to let go of the past and be hopeful. She may feel fragile and perhaps not certain she can handle a new relationship. Although she feels vulnerable, she may have to become more "like a child," to set fears aside, trust, and open herself up to emotional involvement. Another interpretation might be to look at the Coffin-Child pair as representing the end (death) of childlike innocence and naiveté. What Mary wanted or had (or thought she had) in the past, was simply not realistic and she needs to "bury" those unreasonable ideals in her next relationship. (Sylvie Steinbach describes this pair as "destructive youngster, depressed teen." It is possible that this is something she will have to deal with in her next relationship.)

Looking at the middle three cards (Heart, Dog, Coffin), we might suspect that a previous relationship ended because of a partner's actual physical death. In any case, looking only at those three cards, the lovely sentiments expressed by the Heart and Dog seem to come to a halt with the Coffin.

Understand that I am here to show you options and opportunities, to help you make decisions about which direction to take when you are at a crossroads, and to tell you when it is time to let something go and move forward on your path.

(2) What would you like me to understand about myself?

FOX – Card 14

I would like you to understand that you have within yourself the qualities of a trickster – sometimes not in a good way. Yet, these qualities can be harnessed and directed to your benefit, giving you power in competition (The Fox is the patron of entrepreneurs and creators). The part of you that aligns with The Fox knows that opportunities must be taken while the iron is hot. Timing is everything. Uncertainty can be lethal.

(3) What strengths and/or weaknesses do we have as a team?

COFFIN – Card 8

Together we approach the stages of life as endings and beginnings, loss and gain. We learn and teach the art of letting go and surrendering to the natural cycles of change. The ability and willingness to do this is a strength, but there may be times when even together, we are not able to embrace the message that time is passing or running out. We may see only troubled times until and unless we are able to flip our perspective and experience a new way of being.

This is good information and food for thought as I begin to do readings with these cards!

Having fallen in love long ago (2013) with Shaheen’s Tattered Nomad Oracle (see my review of that deck HERE), I couldn’t wait to get his Lunar Nomad Oracle deck and book in my hands.

EDITED TO ADD: The Lunar Nomad Oracle and Tattered Nomad decks are not identical. Some have been reworked for the Lunar Nomad deck. (zs 3 Apr 2018)

My copy of the Tattered Nomad deck is “poker size,” meaning fairly small cards (3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches). The Lunar Nomad deck cards are larger (6 x 4-1/4 inches), so I can appreciate the art even more.

With the Tattered Nomad deck, I received an 8 by 10-3/4 inch paper insert giving keywords for each card and a diagram of how to lay out the cards for a reading. The Lunar Nomad Oracle comes with a 143-page guide filled with so much more than keywords.

I love this new “incarnation” of the Tattered Nomad Oracle as the Lunar Nomad Oracle! The cards are packaged in a lightweight cardboard box, which is then placed into a sturdier box made with one side open. The guidebook slips neatly into that heavier box alongside the box of cards. Kudos to Weiser Books for this attractive and practical presentation!

I read the guidebook cover to cover, while looking at each card as I read Shaheen’s descriptions, insights, and commentary. The care, attention, and writing style all combine to create an enjoyable, informative experience.

The idea of my Lunar Self appearing in “sudden sparks of inspiration, the stirring of dramatic gut feelings, in vivid dreams” resonates strongly with me. I would like to think that I am not burying my Lunar Self these days or allowing my Solar Self to take over. However, at one time in my life, I am certain that I did do that. I agree with Shaheen when he writes, “It is important to understand that the Solar and Lunar Self are not in opposition with each other when they are fully venerated. The Solar Self supports the Lunar Self. . . The Solar Self takes the abstract impressions of the Lunar Self and finds a way to utilize the information in a logical sequence.”

MOON (32)

Keywords: “emotion, feeling, intuition, lunar cycle, art, hidden talents, imagination, winter”

Favorite Quotes:

“The Moon offers a passage into your unconscious mind where your wisdom, potential, and power really reside.”

“Something deep within you is awakening. Make space for that beautiful moonbeam to glow and gain light.”

Mushrooms are plentiful on this card. As a symbol, mushrooms can represent longevity, an image of primeval Heaven, the souls of the dead or reborn, or life regenerated (life from death). Supernatural associations with mushrooms are also common.

TOWER (19)

Keywords: “authority, large business, buildings, places of power, school, church, enterprise, condescendence”

Favorite Quotes:

“Historically the Tower was built as a defensive structure. . . Whoever watches from the Tower is alerted to your presence before your arrival.”

“The Tower can become a shadow or a torch. What are you locking away from the world? What feelings are you trying to swallow?”

Unlike traditional Tower card in the Tarot, there is no lightening or fire hitting the central structure, nor are the people falling from the windows or parapets. Huge wings seem to me to suggest the possible beneficial nature of place of power, depending on what you are looking for or rebelling against.

STARS (16)

Keywords: “wishes, hopes, possibilities, guidance, independence, dreams, expansion, fame”

Favorite Quotes:

“In the vast expanses of the sky, an octopus floats tranquilly in the embrace of infinity. He is an emblem of mystery and intelligence. The enigmatic quality of the octopus mirrors the mystery within each of us.”

“Consider looking at your natal chart to gain more insight on the energies that are working in your life. Moving with the cosmic flow allows you to create more fluidity.”

I just love the design and coloring of this card, especially the octopus as he shoots through the sky as if sky and ocean were one and the same.

CLOUDS (6)

Keywords: “confusion, conflict, lack of focus, obstacles, worries, depression”

Favorite Quotes:

“Confusion can blow in like a deadly storm or slip silently through the cracks like an insidious smoke.”

“The Clouds may seem ominous, but avoid holding them in contempt. They are teachers of tough love. Usually they show us where we are working too hard and pushing against our own wisdom.”

I love that this illustration shows a perfume atomizer and clouds of fragrance, capable of confusing not only the eye but the sense of smell and taste. Clouds up in the sky seem far away, but clouds of smoke or perfume swirling around your head add a dimension to the card that I find enriching and enlightening.

Court Case Follow-Up

This post is a follow-up to two readings I did on this blog, one on November 8 and one on December 2, concerning a court case. Here are links to those readings:

Court Case / Lawsuit Reading

Court Case - A Lenormand Perspective

Now I will give a brief summary of what happened concerning this case.

The hearing scheduled for December 19 was postponed while court representatives checked the decedent’s safe deposit box to determine if it contained a Will. It did not. The hearing was held as rescheduled on Friday, December 22. Petitioner #2 (the decedent’s son) was named Personal Representative for the Estate and the decedent’s children received the house and property on which it sits.

A couple of comments about the readings:

Indications were strong in the November reading that Petitioner #2 (KING OF SWORDS) and his lawyer (ACE OF WANDS) had a lot of power and positive energy together, whereas the lawyer (KNIGHT OF CHALICES) representing Petitioner #1 (the decedent’s estranged spouse) (FIVE OF SWORDS) did not.

The Five of Swords suggested that Petitioner #1 was battling or struggling. Her chances of winning were represented by the SEVEN OF WANDS (showing her in a defensive position), whereas the chances of winning for Petitioner #2 were represented by the SIX OF WANDS (the quintessential “Victory” card).

The Final Outcome in the reading was shown by the KNAVE OF WANDS, a card that is not only the same suit as Petitioner #2’s lawyer (ACE OF WANDS) but bears the same caduceus symbol on it as that other card.

I felt that the dominance of “active” (Fire, Air) energy in the reading suggested a quick decision from the judge, which also turned out to be accurate once the hearing was actually held.

The Lenormand reading carried a sense of delays or obstacles to a decision, and that turned out to be true, if only for a few days (Dec. 19 postponed to Dec. 22). The “loss of a job” could very well have referred to Petitioner #1, who had petitioned to be named but was NOT named personal representative.

I feel the cards in both readings gave credible insight into the energy surrounding this matter and the likelihood of a particular outcome.

Court Case - A Lenormand Perspective

I did a reading about a court case/lawsuit back on November 8 using the Tarot. To read it, click HERE.  

I have decided to do a reading today on the same matter using one of my Lenormand decks. In keeping with Lenormand tradition, I will read a line of cards rather than using positional definitions.

I am doing a Lenormand line of five, where there is a central focus card, plus the following steps:

* The heart of the matter (2+3+4)

* 1+2

* 4+5

* Reflect 1+5 and 2+4

My question is: “What do my nieces and nephews need to expect or understand about the hearing on December 19?” 

I am using the Mystical Lenormand painted by Urban Trösch (AGMÜLLER). Here is the line:

CHILD (13) …........ MICE (23) …....... PATHS (22) …... ANCHOR (35) ….. PARK (20)

The Heart of the Matter: MICE + PATHS + ANCHOR

Guidebook: Loss, sorrows, theft PLUS alternatives, decision PLUS work, job, training, stability

This does describe the situation. The court case stems from a loss (death) and therefore sorrow, plus each party in the lawsuit considering the other to be a “thief,” taking things that belong to them. Both parties are seeking stability (Anchor) for themselves.

Regula Elizabeth Fiechter describes the combination of MICE and PATHS as “all ways blocked at the moment.” PATHS combined with ANCHOR = “way with a lot of work.” ANCHOR combined with MICE = “unemployment, difficulty at work.”

I get a sense of delays, blockages, or obstacles at the heart of this court case, that may make a resolution difficult and time-consuming. The Anchor can indicate being “stuck.”

1 + 2: CHILD plus MICE

Guidebook: Children PLUS loss, sorrows, theft

A very appropriate reference, as the children of the person who died (mentioned above) are on one side of this lawsuit, in danger of losing what they feel rightfully belongs to them.

4 + 5: ANCHOR plus PARK

Guidebook: work, job, training, stability PLUS public places, many people involved

There is a possible connotation here of a profession that involves working or contact with the public. Certainly that would apply to the attorneys and the judge in this situation.

Reflect 1+5 and 2+4:

CHILD plus PARK: If we take the “Child” as a reference to the children of the deceased person, we see them here in a public setting (the courtroom?).

MICE plus ANCHOR: Can suggest loss of a job, which could refer to any number of things here. Perhaps one of the parties will fire their attorney(s)? Perhaps the judge will be replaced? It is also interesting to consider that both parties are petitioning to be named “personal representative” for the deceased. One of the parties will be given that job officially by the court; the other will "lose" that job.

I can’t help thinking that things may not be completely resolved on December 19. There may be delays, perhaps due to a change in attorneys or judge or something being “stuck” in place causing a postponement or delay.

Lenormand Relationship Reading

This reading is for a friend who is in a serious relationship with a woman and is wondering how things might evolve between them. One concern he shared with me is that she is quite a bit younger than he is (26 years). At their current ages – 65 and 39 – that isn’t a big problem, but my friend is thinking ahead to whether the age difference would be a major issue down the road.

I decided to see what the Dreaming Way Lenormand cards could tell us. I am aware that typically, Lenormand cards are read in lines or rows rather than drawn into individual positions. However, I am eager to see how the cards can adapt to this type of reading.

The positions for this reading are: (1) what is the guidance for this relationship from the universe? (2) what does he want or need from this relationship? (3) what does she want or need from this relationship? (4) what temptation do they need to resist? and (5) what can help them make this relationship last?

What is the guidance for this relationship from the Universe?

WHIPS (11)

This card can be interpreted as indicating physical punishment or violence, but I think in this case it’s more about habits or reflex responses that have become ingrained and repeat themselves over and over again. The Whips card can refer to communication. Both of these people have been married before, and I think that the Universe is cautioning them to question and discontinue negative patterns of communication or behavior that they might have fallen into in past relationships. They need to break free and not “punish” each other by reenacting scenes or “playing old recordings” from the past.

What does he want or need from this relationship?

CLOUDS (6)

He wants or needs for the relationship to relieve confusion and uncertainty, troubling thoughts and challenges he faces.

What does she want or need from this relationship?

SUN (31)

She wants or needs for this relationship to give her a feeling of hope and optimism, to inspire confidence and enthusiasm that she may have lost due to a previous relationship or situation. As an extra note: Both of these people were born with the Sun in Leo, a sign ruled by the Sun. I get a sense that the woman wants to be with someone who is much like her, a "soulmate" if you will, born under the same sign with many of the same qualities.

What temptation do they need to resist?

It could be that this something or someone really does need to go, but it can be done carefully rather than using a slash-and-burn approach.

What can help them make this relationship last?

As Beyoncé famously sang: "If you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it." Commitment and dedication can help them make this relationship last. The Ring could refer to the idea that marriage (as opposed to living together without being married) could be an important part of creating a lasting relationship. Some type of contract is desirable here. It’s possible that buying a house together (for example) might prove helpful, but I’m inclined to think the Ring should be taken literally in this case.

Should I Buy a New Deck?

I have come across some awesome Lenormand decks for sale, self-published by the amazing Lynn Boyle, at www.etsy.com/shop/AquariusWellbeing . We all know that I already have enough Lenormand decks, right? (Right?) So what could be more fitting than asking one of those decks: 

Should I buy one of Lynn’s Lenormand decks?

I am using a system in which cards from a red suit (hearts, diamonds) indicate a "yes” or “very likely” answer, whereas cards from a black suit (spades, clubs) indicate "no" or “not likely.”

The Celtic Lenormand by Chloë McCracken, illustrated by Will Worthington (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) has agreed to help me answer my question with a 3-card line. (To read my review of this deck, click HERE.)

And the cards say….

CROSS (36 / 6 of Clubs): NO

SNAKE (7 / Queen of Clubs): NO

WOMAN (29 / Ace of Spades): NO

So, my first reaction to this is: “Hey, who asked you?” Then I remember… oh yeah, I did.

Starting with the third card, WOMAN, I feel this could refer to me or to Lynn, the creator of the decks I am considering. The woman on the card faces and looks toward SNAKE (who faces and looks towards her).

In Chloë McCracken’s guidebook for The Celtic Tarot, interpretation of the SNAKE card focuses on the idea of transformation or “shedding” something that is no longer useful. There is a female association to this card as well, along with the possibility that this female is either deceptive or simply making big changes in her life. If I am the female, is it possible that I am trying to “deceive myself” into thinking I need another Lenormand deck? Could the cards be saying I need to “shed” some of the decks I currently own before I think about buying a new one?

Back to the line of three. Looking at the first card I drew, CROSS, I personally get a strong “religious” or “religion” vibe. Secondarily, I think of the expression “a cross to bear,” suffering under a burden. CROSS can refer to the ethics of a situation or to overcoming difficulties through spirituality.

Now, left to right:

CROSS plus SNAKE: I am getting a sense of the need to transform, change, or “shed the skin” of something related to religious or spiritual beliefs.

SNAKE plus WOMAN: As I mentioned above, perhaps a deceptive female or one who is making or needs to make big changes in her life. Self-deception?

WOMAN plus CROSS: A woman who turns to or needs to turn to religion or spirituality to deal with a burden or important issue in her life.

Well, then. Please do hurry over to eBay and buy one or more of the decks I am “shedding.” Perhaps then I will get the go-ahead for one of Lynn’s decks from my cards.

Relationship Potential: Lenormand Five Card Line

I am really enjoying browsing and reading information about the Lenormand over at http://www.annak-tarot.at . Anna K is bringing out her own Lenormand deck this summer (can’t wait!), but in the meantime, I decided to use a method she shares on her web site with one of the decks currently living with me.

I am using Shaheen’s Tattered Nomad Oracle (Lenormand style cards) for this reading. To read my review of this deck, click HERE.

I have a relationship in mind that I am interested in exploring, so my question is: “What is the potential future development of this relationship?"

A bit of background: These two people are in their 30s. They have been living together for a couple of years. He has expressed interest in getting married, but she is not sure that is what she wants. She has been married before; he has not.

Using a total of five cards, I am combining each card with its neighbor to the right and interpreting the last card individually, too, as a Peak. Lastly, I am discussing the center card as a potential Pivotal.

The Cards:

The House/4…..The Woman/29…..The Bouquet/9…..The Clover/2…..The Tree/5

Stage 1 (House + Woman):
Security, family, and home are keywords for The House. The Woman typically represents a woman or feminine energy. This combination gives me a feeling that the woman in this relationship has been the primary contributor to a sense of “security, family, and home.” It is possible that the man’s “feminine side” also is involved in creating this homey atmosphere they share.

Stage 2 (Woman + Bouquet):
The Bouquet suggests gifts, affection, and encouragement. Here again, it seems that the woman in the relationship offers (or feels that she offers) most of the affection and encouragement, or works hardest at bringing those things to the relationship. The man’s “feminine side” may also be involved, as with House + Woman, but I just get the feeling that the woman sees herself as the primary source for these things in the relationship.

Stage 3 (Bouquet + Clover):
The Clover can represent new beginnings, luck, or opportunities. In “stage 3” of the future development of this relationship, it looks like perhaps the provision of gifts, affection, and encouragement could be more equally distributed between the man and woman. Or, at the very least, the man is likely to have an opportunity to contribute more in that area.

Stage 4 (Clover + Tree):
The new beginning, luck, and opportunity of The Clover can contribute to the health, growth, and progress represented by The Tree. One leads to or naturally evolves into the other.

The Peak: The Tree
Certainly the qualities represented by The Tree are desirable in any relationship, and this card as “The Peak” tells us health, growth, and progress are indeed possible for this relationship in the future.

The Pivotal: The Bouquet
As the Pivotal, I see The Bouquet as reinforcing the message that if the provision of “gifts, affection, and encouragement” can be more evenly distributed between the couple, that will make all the difference in the outcome.

When I look at this line of cards, The Woman stands out, positioned between The House and The Bouquet. She seems to be (or at least feel) responsible for creating/maintaining the home and for giving affection and encouragement – and frankly, she doesn’t look happy about it. Perhaps one of the reasons she is not as keen on marriage as he is, is that she currently feels her partner does not “pull his weight” in areas that are important to her. She wants a more equal distribution and to be on the receiving end of some of the gifts she has been giving before she commits to a second marriage.

Fairy Tale Reading: Tarot and Lenormand

In my _review_ of the lovely and talented Fairy Tale Lenormand (artwork by Lisa Hunt, written by Arwen Lynch, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.), I mentioned the possibility of doing a reading that combines this Lenormand deck with one or more of my Fairy Tale tarot decks.

THREE OF WANDS – _The First Voyage of Sinbad the Seaman_

The card representing my “yesterday” is about making plans, exploring, dreaming of new horizons. As a young man, Sinbad is careless, squandering the wealth he inherited from his parents. I can see how, in some ways, I squandered the many gifts of many different kinds that I was given. The Three of Wands, however, does not represent regrets or unhappy outcomes. It represents a spirit of adventure, a desire and a willingness to search and explore and expand. This, too, applies to my “yesterday.”

(2) today: Fairy Tale Lenormand

SUN (Ace of Diamonds / 31) – _Little Daylight_

My “today” is represented by a very positive Lenormand card, the Sun, with the keywords “opportunities, success, vitality.” This deck associates the Sun card with the tale “Little Daylight,” one of those “female saved by the kiss of a male” stories that I lost my fondness for after reading The Cinderella Complex: Women's Hidden Fear of Independence Paperback by Colette Dowling in 1982. Nevertheless, my “today” is indeed based on a “rescue” of sorts that is not all that far removed from this type of story. Unlike the story, in my case, I did not lie sleeping, awaiting that magical kiss. My own decisions, choices, and actions contributed to the outcome and my present circumstances.

(3) tomorrow: The Fairy Tale Tarot by Lisa Hunt (Llewellyn Publications)

NINE OF CUPS – _The Mermaid and the Boy_

The story of The Mermaid and the Boy comes from Lapland, and it comes complete with the promise of a first-born child in exchange for being saved from death, an attempt to hide the child to avoid making good on the promise, and the child growing up and going out into the world. Out in that world, the boy helps various beasts, gaining the ability to turn into those beasts as needed, and this allows him to escape the mermaid who snatches him from the shore in fulfillment of that long-ago promise. The boy marries a princess and all is well in the end.

So, in terms of my “tomorrow,” I can look at this story not only on the surface but a bit more deeply, with the help of Lisa Hunt’s commentary: “We have shed the last vestiges of emotional turmoil and are now on the path toward reaching our objectives. We enjoy the ride as we feel the exhilaration of our goals being fed into our emotional well-being. We feel a keen sense of personal accomplishment and bask in the multitudinous blessings that are finally making themselves visible.”

I can certainly live with that!

Fairy Tales + Lisa Hunt + Arwen Lynch . . . I’m already reaching for this deck. . . And then U.S. Games puts it in a wonderful little metal tin box. I’m almost speechless, but not quite. Let me continue.

From “_The Enchanted Horse_”  to “_East o’ the Sun, West o’ the Moon_”  to “_Rose Red and Snow White_”  to “_The Red Shoes_,” the Fairy Tale Lenormand carries us through many cultures, countries, and concepts, while connecting us neatly to the thirty-six cards of the Lenormand oracle.

Even if you completely ignore the Little White Book (LWB) and the fairy tale descriptions, you can still use this as a Lenormand deck, thanks to Lisa Hunt’s highly successful effort to modify her approach to the art. Her signature love of detail is still evident but has been geared toward simplicity and ease of access, in keeping with the Lenormand’s purpose.

Familiarity with the tales (as told by Arwen Lynch) simply serves to enrich and enhance the reader’s experience with these cards. For example, when I see the Garden card from the Fairy Tale Lenormand, I not only pick up the traditional meaning of “friends, festivities, acquaintances, gatherings,” I remember Oscar Wilde’s story of “_The Selfish Giant_,” whose garden remained in a wintry state until one brave child dared to enter, causing everything in the garden to bloom. The Snake warns of “cheating, betrayal, manipulation.” The image on the card reminds me of how Rudyard Kipling’s mongoose, _Rikki Tikki Tavi_, deals with evil cobras, protecting his humans from the threat.

I love the spreads in the LWB, especially the Tower Spread (based on Rapunzel) and Happily Ever Afters, a 12-card spread laid out in three fans of four cards each.

I am looking forward to using this deck alone and perhaps in combination with one of my Fairy Tale Tarot decks.

BASIC INFORMATION

The Fairy Tale Lenormand is based on the Lenormand system but includes 38 cards instead of 36. This is because the Fairy Tale deck contains two “Gentleman” cards and two “Lady” cards. In each case, there is a “peasant” version and a “prince” or “princess” version. Many fairy tales have a peasant becoming a prince (or vice versa), and female characters are often either a peasant or princess.

The deck of 38 cards and accompanying 120-page guidebook are packaged inside a metal tin. The guidebook contains a Foreword by Donnaleigh de LaRose and an Introduction by Arwen Lynch, who also provides the commentary for each card.

A section at the end of the booklet contains information on Fan Spreads (spreads that use the shape of a fan), a Crossroads Spread, a Tower Spread, and a spread called Happily Ever Afters consisting of three fans with four cards each.

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The art from one of the cards (#30 – Lilies) is on the front of the tin and the guidebook. The tin measures about 4 by 2-3/4 inches. The booklet is 2-1/4 inches wide by 3-1/2 inches tall and 1/4 inch thick. The card measure 2-1/4 by 3-1/2 inches.

The fronts of the cards have tan borders surrounding a full color image. Card numbers are in the upper left corner. Card titles are centered below the image, along with the name of the playing card that corresponds to that Lenormand card. Reversible card backs feature a tan background with an intricate design, a border of vines, leaves, and flowers in green and brown. An intricate green and brown design featuring mirror-image old-fashioned keyholes is centered on the card backs.

The glossy guidebook cover is made of sturdy stock. The inside is printed black on white with a couple of black and white illustrations and spread layouts (individual cards are not illustrated ion the booklet). Card descriptions include the number and name of the card, the playing card association, keywords for that card, and two pages describing the fairy tale association and how it relates to the traditional meaning of the Lenormand card.

AUTHOR

As stated on her _web site_,  Arwen Lynch “began reading the Tarot in 1980 when a friend handed her the Thoth deck. She didn’t really like the Thoth deck then (her opinion has changed since) so moved on to the Herbal Tarot which she still has in her collection of over 150 Tarot and Oracle decks.” A past president of the American Tarot Association, Lynch is also the author of several books under the pen name Marilu Mann.

Lisa Hunt’s art is well known in the cartomancy community thanks to her work on beautiful tarot and oracle decks such as the Animals Divine Tarot (Llewellyn Publications), The Winged Enchantment Oracle by Lesley Morrison (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.), Ghosts and Spirits Tarot (U.S. Games), Fantastical Creatures Tarot by D.J. Tarot and Oracle Combination Reading

For this 3-card reading, I am placing a Tarot card in the center with one Oracle cards on either side. I forget where I read about this idea. Probably a lot of people have done it, but here we go.

I decided the “Tarot card in the center” will represent “An issue I need to address.” The two oracle cards will represent what might help me and what might hinder me.

Let’s do a “Totally Ciro Marchetti Reading.” The decks I am using  -- all with art by Ciro Marchetti -- are:

Issue I need to address: THE MAGICIAN
In general, The Magician typically refers to the male principal – the active, outgoing energy we channel into the outer world, the tools (skills, knowledge) we use and how we use those tools. The message I always see in this card is one of empowerment, an assurance that I already have the power to accomplish what I desire. I need to recognize and utilize those tools – whether they are Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles, or a combination of all four!

What might help me: OCCUPATION (34)
Hmmm… fascinating, really. The booklet that comes with the Fin de Siècle Kipper tells us that this card typically represents self-employment, handcrafting, freelancing, doing work you enjoy … all of which have occupied most of my time for almost 20 years now. It is these pursuits, apparently, that might help me develop and expand the full use of all the tools at my disposal.

What might hinder me: MOON (32)
The booklet that comes with the Gilded Reverie Lenormand states that the Moon “does not quite live up to the brilliance of the Sun, she is more watery in nature and she really wants to be a ‘Star’ – to have recognition.” Is a desire for recognition or “fame” something that might hinder me or prevent me from making the best use of all of the tools available to me? Is this a case where my imagination is a liability – because I “imagine” receiving a level of recognition and acknowledgment that I simply am not going to receive? And then, when I notice this lack of recognition, I become discouraged, which can lead to being less creative and less energetic. The Moon is also about cycles. Perhaps my energy and confidence waxes and wanes like the Moon from month to month.

Very interesting! And lots to keep in mind.

Be on guard for trickery this month, Capricorn! Someone you think you know may be manipulating you or using you to further their own agenda. Who can resist the blend of Lenormand cards, Kwon Shina’s art (which I knew and loved from the Dreaming Way Tarot published by U.S. Games), and commentary by the accomplished Lynn Araujo? Yes, I was “predisposed” to like (love) this deck – but I think maybe you are, too!

Anyway, for those of you convinced that there were a limited number of ways the Lenormand cards could be presented and they’d all been done, Kwon Shina didn’t get the memo. Her Bear (card 15) is a person covering his or her face with a bear mask; her Fish (on card 34) seem to be flying rather than swimming, protected from the elements by a large umbrella; her Book (card 26) has an open door carved out of one side. The Fox (card 14) is draped over the shoulder of a woman as if it is her pet or part of her apparel. Exploring each card is a delight and a challenge.

Araujo’s Little White Book is written in a clear, concise style that imparts a lot of information without droning on and on. The Introduction brings us into the process and elements involved in the creation of the deck. I really like the idea of using quotations from famous people to represent each card and the quotations that were chosen.

Here is a “Daily Draw” I did for today: two cards for advice/insight into the day ahead.

I love the overall “green” vibe in this pair of cards. With the House we get a sense of “security, stability, comfort, structure, welcome” (LWB). The Tree offers “health, vitality, well-being, stewardship, ecology, fertility.” I work from my home, which is surrounded by trees. I was just getting ready to go outside and sit on our deck with my breakfast and a book.

These two cards together convey serenity and well-being, a sense of stability along with an opportunity to thrive and grow – and encouragement to help everything around me thrive and grow. So perhaps not an “eventful” day, as such, but one that allows for contemplation and a renewed commitment to stewardship.

I can certainly see myself using this deck on a regular basis, and I will be sure to share some of those readings on Tarot Notes!

BASIC INFORMATION

The 36 cards in this deck follow the traditional names, numbers, and playing card associations linked with Lenormand cards. Images are printed on glossy, sturdy card stock. The cards are packaged in a beautiful, sturdy box with a lift-off lid. The “Little White Book” is particularly nice, with a colorful card-stock cover.

The cards measure 2.5” x 3.5”. The card numbers appear top and center in a circle with a white background. The name and playing card associations appear at the bottom, centered in a rectangle with a solid white background. The images extend to all corners (no borders). Card corners are rounded.

Card backs feature a row of houses and a whimsical, jester-type figure in a butterfly mask. The figure is repeated randomly in various sizes and places – in the sky, on the roof, etc. I get the impression that the figures are rising continuously from the ground into the air, pausing occasionally to pose on a rooftop. I suppose they could also be floating downward to land on the ground. Or both at the same time!

The Little White Book includes an information Introduction by author Lynn Araujo, who also provides a two-page spread on each card featuring the card number, title, and playing card association; a quotation; a description/discussion of the card meaning; and a set of keywords. This pattern is broken occasionally. There is no quotation for the Man or the Lady cards, and the Lilies card description features two quotations.

For example, the quotation chosen for 1. Rider – 9 Hearts is from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward and make your dreams come true.” Keywords for this card are: News, change, movement, messages, discovery, visitor, opportunity.

A section in the back of the booklet titled “Reading with Dreaming Way Lenormand” offers examples of a 2-card spread, a line of five cards, and the Spiral Spread, which can be done with any number of cards (ten cards or more seems ideal).

Lynn Araujo is Director of Communications & Editorial at U.S. Games Systems, Inc. As she tells us in the Introduction to the Dreaming Way Lenormand, “I had worked on a number of Lenormand projects (Gilded Reverie, Under the Roses, Celtic Lenormand, Blue Bird Lenormand and Maybe Lenormand) before taking on the assignment of writing this booklet, so I was well versed in the traditional card meanings. I have also studied the methodology for reading with the Lenormand system of divination.” Araujo’s clear, direct writing style is perfect for seasoned Lenormand readers as well as beginners.

ART 

Many of us are familiar with Kwon Shina’s art from the Dreaming Way Tarot (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) For the Dreaming Way Lenormand, Shina gives us evocative, often whimsical images and vignettes, some in pastels, others in vivid, bright colors. Each card provides a basic, recognizable Lenormand visual, along with subtle, often playful touches that are fun to seek and discover. For example, on card 17, the Stork stands proudly by the seashore. Closer inspection reveals a nest of eggs on the Stork’s head, emphasizing the idea of an imminent “birth” of a child, new season, or new arrival of some kind. On the Coffin card, we see a sardine can, the top of which has been partly rolled up to reveal the lower half of a girl’s body. As Araujo states in the LWB: “We don’t know if the can is being opened or closed. The person may have chosen to retreat into a dark place, away from people and problems.”
