When will my financial situation improve?

A sample reading using
The Goddess Tarot
by Kris Waldherr
(US Games Systems Inc.)

QUESTION
When will my financial situation improve?

ANSWER

Thank you for this opportunity to do a free three card reading for you through the Free Tarot Reading Network. You asked about your financial situation and when it will improve.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not a trained financial counselor. I always suggest that my clients get financial advice from someone who is trained in that field.

Before I continue with your reading, let me explain how I use the Tarot to answer questions concerning "when" something will happen. I do not believe the cards can give us the day or date or even a firm time frame in which something will take place. Instead, I ask the cards to help identify what needs to be done before the event in question (in your case, improved finances) can occur. For your 3 card reading I am using The Goddess Tarot.

Below are the positional definitions I used, the cards I drew into those positions, and my interpretations.

Position 1. What you need to know: TEN SWORDS

It appears that the worst is over. You have an opportunity to turn a corner in the area of finances. The potential is high that your struggles will be reduced from this point forward.

Position 2. What you need to do: LOVE

There seems to be a need for you to harmonize your emotions and your mind rather than letting one dominate and control your decisions and actions where finances are concerned. I am willing to bet that emotions are the problem and need to be balanced by common sense and careful analysis. Once you have made progress in this area, financial matters are likely to improve. There is also a possibility that a new, important relationship with another person is on the horizon for you, and that the financial situation will be influenced by the development of this relationship.

Position 3. What you need to avoid: FOUR PENTACLES

Avoid spending more than you can afford to spend. Conserve and protect your resources. Be practical.

There seems to be a strong possibility that positive changes in your financial circumstances will occur when you have learned necessary lessons, increased your knowledge of financial issues, and put that knowledge into practice. You may already be well on the way to accomplishing this.

Based on the birth information you provided, I see that when you were born the Sun (identity) and Mercury (the mind) were both in Gemini, an Air sign known for keen intellect. You seem to have the ability to work through these issues and gain better control.

It is my hope that the insight gained through this reading will help you make decisions and take action in line with your best interests. Always remember that your future lies in your hands. If you have time I would like to hear from you about your reading. Thank you for letting me read for you.

Six-Card Spread for Clarity

This spread is provided in The Sacred Sisterhood Tarot Guidebook by Ashawnee Dubarry (Red Wheel Books). I am using The Sacred Sisterhood Tarot (illustrated by Coni Curi) for the reading. You can see my review of this deck _HERE_

I found this reading with this deck to be very insightful, helpful, and true for me.

The Sacred Sisterhood Tarot

Positional Definitions

(1) Feelings
(2) Needs
(3) Concerns
(4) The Present Moment
(5) The Obstacle
(6) The Future Outcome

My Cards and Interpretations

(1) Feelings: THE TOWER

Trying to be honest here, I am not sure I understand how The Tower represents my feelings. However, I realize that lately (more than usual), I am keenly aware that everything can turn upside down suddenly, without apparent warning. That is the nature of life itself, and as I grow older, I am somewhat fearful of the types of unexpected changes that could occur. I would like to be prepared for “anything” to happen, but I don’t feel prepared. I am ever so slightly on edge at all times, subconsciously if not consciously.

(2) Needs: SIX OF PENTACLES

I need to feel that I am secure and stable, and can afford to be generous to those I view as less secure/stable. As one might expect with the suit of Pentacles, I experience this primarily as an “Earth” issue – finances, health, possessions, security. Interestingly, this is a card I often associate with my husband, as it appeared long ago in connection to him. I think it is very true that I need what he offers and provides on many levels, particularly at an “Earth” level (physical, material realm), as indicated by the suit of Pentacles.

(3) Concerns: THE STAR

The positive traits represented by The Star include faith, hope, peace, inspiration, and renewal. I think perhaps my concern is that (as seen in The Tower), the things in which I have faith and hope can be upturned and changed at any time. It’s as if having something just makes me realize that it can be lost, and that is concerning.

(4) The Present Moment: KING OF SWORDS

Interestingly, I often see this card as representing my husband, a Gemini with his Moon in Libra (both Air signs, and Swords being the suit of Air in the system I use). It is certainly true that I rely on my husband’s intelligence and judgment in many, many ways. Any sudden change in his role in my life would be a “Tower” situation for sure.

(5) The Obstacle: TEN OF SWORDS

I tend to interpret this as something I “can’t get past” for some reason. In other words, I am stuck irrationally clinging (mentally) to a difficult, painful cycle in my life, and this affects my ability to feel safe and secure. I need to figure out how to let go and move on.

(6) The Future Outcome: TEN OF CUPS

When I use a “future outcome” position in a reading, I bear in mind that the Tarot cannot predict the future with any certainty. There are simply too many variables that influence the future. What I do see here is that there is a strong possibility that I am likely to experience a positive, emotionally fulfilling outcome, due in part, perhaps, to family support and connections with those who matter to me. There is a sense of innocent trust in this card, perhaps indicating that the “concerns” represented by The Star will be overcome. My fears about a “Tower” experience may or may not be well founded. What matters is that ultimately, going forward, the helpful, positive energy is strong.

The Seven Day Show: A Reading

Today's reading uses the Cirque du Tarot by Leeze Robertson, Illustrated by Josh Tufts, and published by Llewellyn. The spread  -- called "The Seven Day Show" -- is from the guidebook that comes with that deck.

Intended to reveal the upcoming week "at a glance," this spread uses one card for each day of the week. Leeze Robertson points on that it is helpful to look for cards that present challenges first (so you can plan for them), then cards that show big bursts of energy (with the potential to interrupt our day). Finally, the mundane cards are likely to indicate the most productive days.

Let's see what's in store for me!

(1) Monday: KNIGHT OF WANDS

The Knight of Wands brings lots of energy to my Monday, energy that I will need to use wisely and well. I may feel overwhelmed at some point, and I may need to get out and get away for a few minutes to regroup.

(2) Tuesday: THE DEVIL

Tuesday, I may find myself dealing with the idea of power – as in where does my power lie? Am I giving my power to someone or something else? Who is pulling the strings?

(3) Wednesday: SIX OF SWORDS

The opportunity for a journey or forward movement of some kind is indicated for Wednesday. A chance for growth is possible, but perhaps only if I can move out of my comfort zone.

(4) Thursday: NINE OF PENTACLES

Feelings of contentment and security are likely on Thursday as I become aware of how my hard work is finally paying dividends. Perhaps I will receive a welcome boost to my self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

(5) Friday: THREE OF PENTACLES

Teamwork is highlighted on Friday, and I have an opportunity to reach out to others to manifest a dream. Or perhaps someone will be reaching out to me to join forces.

(6) Saturday: STRENGTH

Mutual trust and respect create conditions in which I can support someone else or be lifted up by someone. The absence of power struggles is an important key to achieving balance and success.

(7) Sunday: ACE OF SWORDS

Although it’s the end of the week, the Ace of Swords indicates new ideas or flashes of inspiration that can point me in a new direction based on new thinking or a change in mindset.

It will be interesting to see how the week unfolds!

Ghost Spirits Reading

I recently did a 3-card reading for a client in which I asked the Ghost Tarot by David Corsi (Lo Scarabeo) what it could tell her about any spirits that are around her at this time.

After doing that reading, I thought it sounded like a cool idea to do one for myself. So I did!

The Question: What can you tell me about any spirits that are around me at this time?

Before I present the cards that came forward to answer this question, I have to exclaim at the similarities between my reading and the one I did for my client. Both readings contained one Major Arcana card, and in both readings, there were connections between each of the cards and the zodiac sign Sagittarius (or the planet Jupiter, which rules Sagittarius). I don’t necessarily attribute any significance to that – but it’s interesting!

The Cards

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE: The Spirit of Fate. Linked with the planet Jupiter.

This spirit remains with me as the Wheel turns, between highs and lows, failures and successes, death and rebirth. It is not a spirit that needs to “move on.” Rather, I feel it is a spirit that is part of this world as much as any other. As I mentioned, Jupiter is the ruling planet for Sagittarius, which happens to be my Sun sign.

KNIGHT OF WANDS: The Spirit of the Traveller. Linked with three decans between Scorpio and Sagittarius.

The sign Sagittarius is known as the sign of the traveller, and the Ninth House (associated with Sagittarius) is the House of Long-Distance Travel and Philosophy. The spirit represented by this card shows me the vastness of the world that lies ahead of me and behind me.

EIGHT OF WANDS: “Freedom is priceless. And boundless.” Linked with Mercury in Sagittarius.

The saying for this card in the LWB is “Freedom is priceless. And boundless.” And yes, Sagittarius is known for its need and desire for freedom and independence. I love the image on this card, of the golden, glowing woman floating through the sky over hills and rivers, free as the birds who accompany her.

I would be remiss not to mention that Sagittarius was my father’s Sun sign (I was born on his birthday). He passed away in 1998, and I can’t help feeling that these cards somewhat represent his continued presence – not because his spirit “can’t move on,” but because it *can* visit and inhabit this realm as easily as any other.

If you would like a one-card reading about the spirits surrounding you at this time, just leave a comment below. I have to approve all comments, so I will be sure to see it. If you want the reading to be private, you will need to contact me to let me know how to contact you privately.

Me, An Enemy, A Friend, An Opportunity

Today on Tarot Notes, I'm introducing a reading that could be used daily, weekly, monthly, or whenever you like. For this reading, I am using the Otherworld Tarot by Alison Williams, with artwork by Sarah Nowell (Schiffer).

Layout looks like this:

.........(1).........

(2)...............(3)

.........(4).........

Otherworld Tarot

(1) Me: SEVEN OF CUPS (Choice)

Today I am aware of choices, especially at an emotional level. What is most likely to bring happiness and fulfillment to me today (this week, this month, etc.)? I need to make a choice and direct my time and attention accordingly.

(2) An Enemy: PAGE OF WANDS (Creative Inspiration)

My enemy is any tendency to suppress creative inspiration or allow burdens to block creative energy.

(3) A Friend: SEVEN OF SWORDS (Underhandedness)

My friend is an ability to recognize that the motives and tactics I need to employ may have to be kept under wraps and may not be what I would normally feel comfortable using. On the other hand, I may become aware that someone else is keeping secrets and seeking to undermine me or bring me strife in an underhanded way.

(4) An opportunity: THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (Change)

I have an opportunity to better understand that life is constantly changing, there are “ups” and “downs,” and nothing (whether positive or negative) lasts forever. I have an opportunity to assess where I am and, if I’m not happy with that, to take comfort in the knowledge that things can and will change. I may also have an opportunity to acknowledge that something I view as positive in my life might very well change.

New Year Spread for 2020

It’s New Year’s Day here in North America, so I am going to celebrate with a spread for 2020. I used this same spread on New Year's Day in 2015 here at Tarot Notes.

I am using “Joanna’s New Year Spread” from Journey through the Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert (Llewellyn Worldwide). My deck is the Forest of Enchantment Tarot by Lunaea Weatherstone with illustrations by Meraylah Allwood (Llewellyn).

The Spread

The Positions

1. What do I leave behind in the Old Year?
2. What do I open up to in the New Year?
3. Key Opportunity of the New Year
4. Key Challenge of the New Year
5. Hidden concern (pull from bottom of the deck)
6. Deep Wisdom / Advice from God/dess (pull from middle of the deck)
7. Key Theme of the New Year

My Reading

1. What do I leave behind in the Old Year?

TWO OF VISIONS: I have to say that the appearance of this card gives me pause. If I interpret this card to represent a relationship with someone special, a soulmate, then leaving that behind in the Old Year seems sad to me. It sounds like there is a chance I will be separated from someone either by choice or circumstances.

2. What do I open up to in the New Year?

ACE OF BOONS: Aces, of course, often signify new beginnings, certainly appropriate for something I “open up to” in the New Year. The Ace of Boons is a toad. Nice. But seriously, there are promises here related to the physical, material world – prosperity, healing – the element Earth. I will wear my gift of a toadstone ring with pleasure. (Since I make jewelry, perhaps I will try to find some actual “toadstone” to use…)

3. Key Opportunity of the New Year

THE GREEN MOTHER (Key III): A powerful card (called “The Empress” in traditional decks), The Green Mother is all about fertility, creativity, and generosity. Her feminine power is unrivaled, and she connects us to the natural world, teaching us to love ourselves as well as everything around us. I may literally have an opportunity to act as a “mother” figure to someone, or perhaps even to my own “inner child.”

4. Key Challenge of the New Year

SEEKER OF BOONS: Seekers in this deck are similar to Knights in traditional Tarot decks. Each Seeker has a quest to fulfill and takes action to fulfill it. My challenge in 2020 is to be more like the Seeker of Boons – steady, dependable, practical, patient, good-humored. I need to move slowly and carefully, deliberately and methodically.

5. Hidden concern (pull from bottom of the deck)

KEEPER OF CHALLENGES: Keepers are akin to Kings in this deck, and the suit of Challenges is comparable to the suit of Swords. What is it about the Keeper of Challenges that makes him a “hidden concern” for me? One interesting comment I read in the guidebook for this deck is that “The Keeper of Challenges is not evil, but he’s not good either. This wizard is coolly neutral.” This cool, detached nature is perhaps something I am concerned that I cannot achieve. If I view this card as representing an actual person in my life, this is the card I associate with my husband. Like most of us approaching the age of 70, he has health issues, and it is possible that I have concerns about that, even if I try to keep them hidden.

6. Deep Wisdom / Advice from God/dess (pull from middle of the deck)

WEAVER OF CHALLENGES: Like the Queens in traditional Tarot decks, the Weavers in this deck represent feminine energy and power. The Weaver of Challenges can make my quest harder – whether for my own growth or to prove my worth. The wisdom/advice she offers is delivered with clarity, as she speaks her mind fearlessly. She teaches me to value intelligence and attention to detail, discipline and strong self-esteem. However, I also need to be careful that I do not adopt her less attractive traits, becoming emotionally withdrawn, overly critical, sarcastic, or touchy.

7. Key Theme of the New Year

THE FAERY WIND (Key VII): This card suggests that the key theme of 2020 involves things picking up speed and flowing swiftly towards a positive outcome. Change leads to success, and increased confidence is justified. Important news of my achievements is highly possible.

In summary, it appears that 2020 is likely to have some significant moments or situations for me, given that 4 of the 7 cards in the reading are Major Arcana cards. The element Earth has a strong presence (Ace of Boons, Seeker of Boons, The Oldest One).

An interesting mix of elemental energy in these cards, with Fire being noticeably absent. Challenges (Swords / Air) and Boons (Pentacles / Earth) are the most commonly represented. I am really curious about the relationship or close alliance I am leaving behind.

Give me a reflection of what is happening...

A sample reading using
The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot
by Karen Mahony and Alex Ukolov
(Magic Realist Press)

QUESTION
"Give me a reflection of what is happening
with Scott's and my relationship."

ANSWER

Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot

Your card is the NINE OF CUPS. On this card we see a somewhat portly and obviously very satisfied cat sitting on a barrel in the public room of an inn, licking his lips. Behind him, carved in wood, we see a scene of general merrymaking. The Nine of Cups is sometimes known as the "wish card." It frequently indicates the fulfillment of very basic, down-to-earth wishes or a period of great pleasure, satisfaction, and well-being.

The suit of Cups is associated with the element Water, representing emotions, creativity, affection, love, sensitivity, intuition, and compassion. Water is also associated with relationships, which means that its appearance concerning a question about a relationship is a very encouraging sign. The number Nine often represents a basis for completion, preparation for new cycle, growth through experience, perfection, integration, and fruition. This suggests that your relationship with Scott is at a turning point -- the end of one stage or phase and the beginning of a new stage or phase.

I would say that the reflection this card is giving you is that your relationship with Scott has high potential to be everything you need it to be. It encourages you to focus on the simple contentment and happiness available through this relationship, and to value what you have together. Celebrate the little things and let your appreciation of each other carry you forward.

I hope this is helpful to you. It is my hope that the insight gained through this reading will help you make decisions and take action in line with your best interests. Always remember that your future lies in your hands. Thank you for letting me read for you.

"Will I have new love in my life soon?"

A sample reading using
Tarot of the Gnomes
Art by Antonio Lupatelli
(Llewellyn/Lo Scarabeo)

QUESTION
Will I have new love in my life soon?

ANSWER

Before I continue with your reading,  I need to let you know that really few things are "written in the stars." Most results and consequences derive from our own patterns of behavior and activity or inactivity, awareness or non-awareness. Because our futures are not etched in stone, the Tarot helps us to see the *possibilities* in our lives. Let's look at the possibilities related to your question.

For your 3-card reading I am using Tarot of the Gnomes. This is a somewhat "quirky" deck, yet I have found that it can provide helpful insight into all kinds of issues. I drew three cards to represent: (1) energy currently surrounding this matter, (2) a potential obstacle, and (3) a potential opportunity.

(1) energy currently surrounding this matter
EIGHT OF PENTACLES (Poverty)

Although the gnome on this card may seem pitiful, notice that he is smiling as he holds out his hand as if to catch the huge coin hanging in the air above him. I think this does reflect your current feelings about your situation in terms of your love life. You mentioned that you have been alone almost a year now with your three kids. You may be feeling not only lonely but "impoverished" in various ways. What I like about the Eight of Pentacles here is that it suggests help is on the way. However, with Pentacles being the suit of Earth, things may develop more slowly than you would like.

(2) a potential obstacle
THREE OF WANDS (Worry)

The woman on this card carries a heavy burden, and I think this could refer to the heavy responsibilities and duties you bear as a single parent. However, I do think that this card is saying that your worries about your situation may actually be an obstacle that interferes with your ability to seek and find a fulfilling love relationship. I am wondering if the "help" suggested by the Eight of Pentacles could refer to help with your children, which would relieve some of your burden and free you to be more receptive to relationships at all levels.

(3) a potential opportunity
KNAVE OF PENTACLES (Loan)

Here we move back to the suit of Pentacles, and we see the Knave holding a large coin aloft. You can almost imagine him standing above the person on the Eight of Pentacles, dropping the coin into the beggar's hand. In this deck, the Knave of Pentacles is subtitled "Loan." The loan may not involve money, but is probably going to be available in some area of your everyday work and domestic life. There is perhaps a person or organization that might play a role in presenting you with opportunities for a fulfilling love relationship. Like the Eight of Pentacles, the Knave seems to be saying, "You don't have to go it alone."

Your original question is what we call a yes-or-no question. In other words, the answer can be "yes" or "no." In my experience, the Tarot isn't very reliable in answering yes-or-no questions. However, using a method that I am familiar with, these three cards seem to be saying that the potential isn't strong for you to have a new love in your life "soon" but that there is potential. As I mentioned above, this could develop more gradually or more slowly than you would like.

My purpose in doing this reading is to offer options, possibilities, and perspectives for you to consider. I hope I have succeeded in doing that. Always remember that you are in charge of your destiny and only you can decide the best way to act in your situation.

“Is this relationship worthy of my efforts?"

A sample reading using
Tarot of the Animal Lords
by Angelo Giannini (Illustrator)
(Lo Scarabeo)

QUESTIONS
“Is this relationship worthy of my efforts or is it time to let go and move on?”
"Is he my soulmate or do I move forward and never look back?"

ANSWER

Before I continue with your reading, I would like to share with you my understanding of what a soulmate is. I believe that the soul has many facets. A soulmate is a reflection of one of the facets -- a connection to something in yourself that connects to the same thing in the other person. Thus we can have (and usually do have) more than one soulmate in a lifetime.

For your 3-card reading I am using Tarot of the Animal Lords. This intriguing deck by artist Angelo Giannini uses humanized animals to represent traditional Tarot card meanings. I drew cards to represent (1) strengths of this relationship, (2) obstacles or problems in the relationship, and (3) what will be most helpful to you in making a decision about the relationship.

1. Strengths: KNIGHT OF PENTACLES (Wild Boar)

This card suggests that the relationship has had a certain sturdy, stable, secure quality to it. The boar usually represents fidelity and strength. The suit of Pentacles is the suit of Earth, associated with practicality, material matters, physical condition or experiences, finances, security, family values, and domestic issues.

2. Obstacles or problems: EIGHT OF PENTACLES (Chimpanzee)

The obstacles or problems with the relationship seem to be in the same area as the strengths (Pentacles / Earth). With this card there is a suggestion of "rough edges" or "work needed." Chimpanzees are self-aware, social creatures. They can also frequently use deception to get what they want. The 8 of Pentacles calls your attention to a possible unwillingness to work on the relationship, to resolve differences in an open, honest manner.

3. What will be most helpful to you in making a decision: DEATH (Crow)

In this position, the Death card suggests change -- an end and a beginning. It points to the fact that life is made up of cycles: birth, life, death, and rebirth. The crow is black, the color of night -- but it is out of black darkness of night that the new day is born. This card indicates that something "new" is needed. Something old and outworn needs to be set aside so that something new can be born. Does this mean you should end the relationship? Not necessarily. You must also consider the possibility that the relationship can be improved if both of you are willing to make changes and discard behaviors, attitudes, or circumstances that are no longer useful or beneficial. It is clear, however, that the relationship will probably not thrive if things remain the way they are

It is my hope that the insight gained through this reading will help you make decisions and take action in line with your best interests. Always remember that your future lies in your hands.

Is She Being Truthful? A Sample Reading.

A sample reading using
The Animals Divine Tarot
by Lisa Hunt
(Llewellyn Worldwide)

QUESTION
“Is T---- being truthful with me about what she wants with me?
What is my future with this woman,
and will she ever love me?"

ANSWER

I don’t want to disappoint you, but I need to let you know that I cannot read people’s minds or tell you what they are feeling. Also, I do not predict the future or "tell fortunes." Your future is not predetermined. You and T---- have free will, and are constantly making decisions and choices that affect your future. What I can do is ask the cards what you need to understand about your relationship with T----. For your 3-card reading, I am using the Animals Divine Tarot. Below are the positional definitions I used, the cards I drew into those positions, and my interpretations.

Position 1. Situation: EIGHT OF WANDS (reversed) - the Ant

This card suggests confusion and delays, lack of cooperation, and failure to maintain individuality. This looks like a one-sided situation to me. It doesn't seem like you and T---- are on the same page, singing from the same songbook, or whatever expression you choose to employ to indicate two people who are not progressing toward the same goal.

Position 2. Challenge: TWO OF PENTACLES (reversed) - the Panda

The challenge is to achieve a balance between seemingly opposing choices. You seem to be between a rock and a hard place (sorry -- these expressions just keep coming to me, and they actually seem to be appropriate!) Making a sacrifice or compromise now may or may not result in a more harmonious situation in the future. You can't tell right now. That's the dilemma.

Position 3. Opportunity: TWO OF WANDS (reversed) - the Dragonfly

This is another card referencing a choice (the number Two). You have the opportunity to see past potential illusions and choose how you will direct your energies. You are being encouraged to flow with your intuition and make a decision based on your gut instinct. Don't be deceived by appearances or what may seem immediately attractive. Look at how things might evolve in the long term and plan carefully.

The way you have phrased your questions tells me that you already suspect that T---- is not being truthful. The cards do not seem to dispute that suspicion. Only you can decide what you want, who you want to be, and where you want to go -- with or without T----. I have known people in relationships who are aware that they are being deceived, yet they want to be with the other person so much, they are willing to accept that.

As I said above, I cannot read T----'s mind and I do not predict the future. I can only hope that the insight provided by this reading will help you make choices and decisions in line with your best interests. Always remember that your future is in your hands.

Does my partner of 15 years still love me?

A sample reading using
Tarot of the Old Path
created by Sylvia Gainsford and Howard Rodway
(AGMuller)

QUESTION
“Does my partner of 15 years still love me?”

ANSWER

I don't want to disappoint you, but I cannot read your partner’s mind or tell you what they are feeling or thinking. What I can do is ask the cards for insight into the energy currently surrounding this relationship. Using Tarot of the Old Path, I drew three cards to represent the Situation, Challenge, and Opportunity. Below are the cards I drew into those positions and my interpretations.

Position 1. Situation: THE STAR

On this card, a woman pours nourishing ambrosia onto the land (conscious awareness) and into an estuary flowing forth to the sea (intuitive unconscious). In the foreground we see an iris, symbol of hope and power. This is a very encouraging card to draw in this position. It conveys a sense of harmony, balance, success, inspiration, satisfaction, and a bright future.

Position 2. Challenge: SEVEN OF SWORDS

On this card, a man dressed in protective leather clothing and gloves clutches four swords and glances back over his shoulder with a grin. He appears to have stolen these weapons. As he darts quickly away, he leaves three swords standing in the background. The challenge that faces this relationship appears to involve someone not telling another person everything he or she needs to know. The "theft" shown on the card is in the area of the mind and communication. Concealed information is likely to cause conflict and insecurity.

Position 3. Opportunity: TWO OF CAULDRONS, reversed

On this card, a man and woman stand facing each other. They hold small cauldrons towards the other's lips in a gesture of love and union. Cauldrons is the suit of Water, representing emotions. Reversed, this card warns of separation, disillusion, and a troubled romance. However, in this position (Opportunity), I see this as an indication that you have an opportunity to avoid these things by heeding the messages of the other cards. Open communication and frankness is needed to restore emotional balance and allow all the positive potential indicated by The Star to shine forth.

My goal in providing this reading is to help you feel empowered to make practical, life-affirming decisions or changes. Always remember that your future lies in your hands.

How can I get out of this funk?

A sample reading using
the Haindl Tarot
by Hermann Haindl
(U.S. Games Systems, Inc.)

QUESTION
"I'm feeling like I"m in a funk at the moment and
I want to know what is going on and what I can do to get myself out of it."

ANSWER

For your 1-card reading I am using the Haindl Tarot. Your card is the TWO OF WANDS (Dominion).

Haindl Tarot

On this card we see a ruined church with a staircase that leads upward to an opening that reveals the sky. We see two crossed spears in front of the entrance. The ruins of the church symbolize the power of the soul. The stairway represents a spiritual ascent. The spears symbolize both power and pacification.

Wands is the suit of Fire, representing passion, action, will, confidence, creativity, and brightness, but also battles and struggles. The number Two commonly suggests balancing dualities, tension, or choice.

You mentioned that you feel like you are in a funk. The Two of Wands seems to suggest that there is a decision or choice you need to make, and that you need to then take action based on that decision or choice. The title of this card is "Dominion" and its imagery conveys the spiritual power and strength available to you. The church is in ruins on the card, which makes me think that something in your life may no longer serve the purpose for you that it once did. It still has meaning for you, but has ceased to be what you need it to be.

You can overcome your feeling of being in a funk by starting something new in some area of your life, by choosing to move forward, to follow through on something you have been thinking about. This is a time when it pays to be ambitious, to discover and claim your personal power instead of giving away that power to others. The Two of Wands doesn't guarantee that your path will be completely smooth or easy, but it suggests that you have the stamina and energy to make your way in the world.

My goal in providing this reading is to help you feel empowered to make practical, life-affirming decisions or changes. Always remember that your future lies in your hands.

Using the DruidCraft Tarot, I drew three cards to provide insight into this relationship. In the system I am using, elemental associations determine the strength or weakness of the cards. In this layout, the middle card is called the "principal" card. It is the response to the question. The other two cards modify the principal card. They are read only from an elemental standpoint, not as individual cards.

In addition to the element associated with each card, I assign an element to the question itself. Your question concerns a relationship. Therefore, it has been assigned the element Water (emotions, relationships).

Position 1. THE HERMIT (Earth)
Position 2. KING OF SWORDS (Air)
Position 3. PRINCESS OF SWORDS (Air)

The first thing I do is look at the overall strength of the principal card in this spread. The KING OF SWORDS is fairly strong in this reading. As an Air card, it is compatible with and supported by the question (Water) as well as the PRINCESS OF SWORDS (Air). However, it is incompatible or antagonistic to THE HERMIT, an Earth card.

For more insight, we look at the meaning of the principal card: the King of Swords. As the suit of Air, the Swords represent logic, intellect, and reason. There is a feeling of patience and endurance with this card, a sense of high potential for success if you are willing to work at it. The King of Swords can also represent someone with a very set attitude who has trouble telling the difference between the positive trait of determination and the negative trait of stubbornness.

The cards seem to indicate that this relationship has positive potential. Success is more likely if you can avoid being overly emotional and if you are willing to put forth the effort to resolve any conflicts that may arise.

Twelve Houses of the Zodiac Reading: Part 3

The Twelve Houses of the Zodiac Tarot Spread

Excerpted from
Tarot Awareness: Exploring the Spiritual Path
by Stephen Walter Sterling

I recently came across the Twelve Houses of the Zodiac Spread by Stephen Walter Sterling on line, and I loved the way each house/sign was described in the positional definitions. This spread forms a pattern resembling the astrological birth chart, beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces.

For the purposes of this blog, I am going to do the spread in three “installments.” Part 1 included Houses 1-4. Click _HERE_ to read. Part 2 included Houses 5-8. Click _HERE_to read.

Part 3 includes Houses 9-12. I am using Tarot of the Spirit by Pamela and Joyce Eakins (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.)

PART 3

(9) The House of Philosophy, Sagittarius: Does life hold any particular depth of meaning for you? What are you aiming for? Where do you want to go? What is the nature of your belief system? What do you value? (Fire)

FOUR OF EARTH: Power (Sun in Capricorn) / Traditional Name: 4 of Pentacles
With the Four of Earth, we see the sort of power that protects, guards, and defends me from loss or destruction. It’s about being vigilant about keeping what is mine, what I have worked or fought for, that which is valuable to me. The danger in doing so is that if I focus on preventing loss, I risk losing a sense of what brings true satisfaction.

(10) The House of Pragmatism, Capricorn: What areas of our life do you need to apply practical methods? Where do you need grounding? (Earth)

FIVE OF WIND: Fear (Venus in Aquarius) / Traditional Name: 5 of Swords
Eakins interprets this card as being “trapped in a self-designed prison of negative energy from the past.” There is a sense of intellectual or mental energy taking control and running away with me, and if that is the case, a dose of grounding and practicality could be useful. There is a need to try to see thing as they really are, not how I imagine or fear them to be. Instead of spending so much time “in my head,” I need to become more invested in the “real world.”

(11) The House of Originality, Aquarius: The individual searches for identity with a new approach. How do you relate to others in the process? (Air)

THE MYSTERY CARD
For this position, I have drawn “The Mystery Card,” a card that is unique to this Tarot deck. It is viewed as a card of “birth, death and karmic transitions; incredible power, magic and wonder.” Very appropriate for “The House of Originality,” I think! You can view a fascinating video by Pamela Eakins about this card _HERE_.

(12) The House of Intuition, Pisces: Where is listening to the Inner Voice of critical importance? How is your psychic development proceeding? (Water)

EARTH SISTER: Revelation (Aries, Taurus, Gemini) / Traditional Name: Page of Pentacles
I love that in this deck, Earth Sister represents “the brink of transformation,” advising me that “something new is coming” and I am “moving steadily, with stability.” Few ideas are more appealing when applied to The House of Intuition and psychic development. I like the sense of being “at the beginning” of something but also prepared/ready for that transformation to take place.

(5) The House of Persona, Leo (Fire): What is your outer self like, the personality that you present to the world? How do you express yourself? Do you face life with courage, with flair?

SIX OF WIND: Clarity (Mercury in Aquarius) / Traditional Name: 6 of Swords
The qualities of Aquarius and Mercury (the mind) suggest that my outer self (the personality I present to the world) is, in many ways, that of an intelligent and free-spirited sort of person with the ability to detach that can cause me to come across as being “aloof” or “distant.” In my birth chart, I actually have Mars in Aquarius in the Fifth House (the house I am currently talking about in this reading). From an elemental perspective, this is a combination of Fire (Leo) and Air (Aquarius). Fire and Air are mutually supportive and both are “active” elements, representing forward motion and getting things done.

(6) The House of Detail, Virgo (Earth): Is your attention to priority reasonable and productive? Are you well organized? Are you being of service?

NINE OF WIND: The Screen (Mars in Gemini) / Traditional Name: 9 of Swords
This card typically refers to feelings of being threatened or in danger. Virgo (which happens to be my rising sign) is known for being worried or anxious about things, perhaps overly focused on details. Gemini is an Air sign ruled by Mercury (the mind, thoughts, perceptions), so these fears may or may not be based in reality. If we think about this type of energy in the Sixth House, we can see where it might be disruptive or interfere with my ability to pay attention to detail, to be organized and productive, and could even affect my willingness or ability to be “of service” to others. Mars/Gemini energy can really rock Virgo’s “down-to-earth” boat.

(7) The House of Balance, Libra (Air): Do the activities of your life add to your peace of mind? Is your distribution of energy well proportioned?

THE EMPEROR (Aries)
Linked with the Fire sign Aries, The Emperor is “swift, male, creative energy” with “clear sight and presence of mind” and “exceedingly well organized.” (from Tarot of the Spirit by Pamela Eakins, Ph.D. / Weiser). This energy suggests that the activities of my life contribute to a sense of stability and security, a sense that things are more or less “under my control” as I “oversee my kingdom.”  One would expect The Emperor’s energy to be “well proportioned.” Again we have the combination of Fire and Air, indicating forward progress and achievement.

(8) The House of Intensity, Scorpio (Water): What is it that you feel strongly about? How do you regenerate your emotions, change how you view your inner atmosphere?

FOUR OF WIND: Mastery (Jupiter in Libra) / Traditional Name: 4 of Swords
Interesting to see this somewhat “stagnant” energy appear in “The House of Intensity.” Pamela Eakins describes the Four of Wind as “a holding pattern,” “resting on your laurels.” We are dealing with the Air sign Libra here, a sign known for being indecisive (mostly because Libra craves harmony and dreads conflict, so it can be difficult to make decisions). One way of interpreting the idea of “Mastery” in “The House of Intensity,” is to consider that perhaps I am at a place “between passions,” so to speak. I have indulged in various things that regenerate my emotions and in a sense, have reached a plateau in those areas. The intensity, therefore, is bound to have faded a bit, creating a bit of a lull.

Twelve Houses of the Zodiac Reading: Part 1

The Twelve Houses of the Zodiac Tarot Spread

Excerpted from
Tarot Awareness: Exploring the Spiritual Path
by Stephen Walter Sterling
(Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd.)

I recently came across the Twelve Houses of the Zodiac Spread by Stephen Walter Sterling on line, and I loved the way each house/sign was described in the positional definitions. This spread forms a pattern resembling the astrological birth chart, beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces.

For the purposes of this blog, I am going to do the spread in four “installments.” Part 1 will include Houses 1-4. I am using Tarot of the Spirit by Pamela and Joyce Eakins (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.)

(1) The House of Aspirations, Aries (Fire): Attitude toward reaching a goal, what you intend to accomplish, and the level of your enthusiasm.

FIRE BROTHER: Sun Warrior (Cancer-Leo) / Traditional Name: Knight of Wands
Certainly apropos for this First House (Aries) position, Fire Brother exhibits strength, swiftness, brilliance, and agility. Clever and spontaneous, he can also be irrational and impulsive. With my Sun in the Fire sign Sagittarius, I relate well to this energy as I enthusiastically pursue my goals. I need to guard against impulsive behavior based on sudden bursts of optimism and enthusiasm.

(2) The House of Security, Taurus (Earth): Attitude toward material gain. Are you at peace with your resources?

FIVE OF WATER: Spilling (Mars in Scorpio) / Traditional Name: 5 of Cups
Known as a card of disappointment, regret, and frustration, the Five of Water often admonishes us not to “cry over spilt milk.” If we focus on what we have lost or perhaps never had (three spilled, empty cups), we cannot see that there are still avenues and opportunities and resources available to us. A deeper level of understanding is needed so that we can see above and beyond our disappointments, perceived failures, and deficits.

It is interesting to note that the planet Mars is the traditional ruler of the sign Scorpio. Scorpio and its modern ruling planet, Pluto, both represent death and decay (8th house). This tells us that even when expectations are not met, there is still strength available and an opportunity to “power through” and rise above.

(3) The House of Thought, Gemini (Air): How well you communicate your ideas, your needs, and your creative self. Learning and speaking abilities.

TWO OF WIND: The Crossing (Moon in Libra) / Traditional Name: 2 of Swords
Here we have a second instance of “matching elemental attributions,” with the positional definition being Gemini (an Air sign) and the card representing Libra (another Air sign). Libra represents a desire for peace and harmony as well as indecision. The Moon represents emotions and the subconscious.

Although my Sun sign, Sagittarius, is known for being brutally frank, the appearance of this card in the house of communication suggests that deep down, I have a strong desire for my communication and expressions of creativity to be peaceful and harmonious – in other words, I really would rather not ruffle feathers, offend, or start arguments. At times, this can make it hard for me to make a choice or decision, since I want everything to remain harmonious.

(4) The House of Emotion, Cancer (Water): The nature of your home environment. What are the areas of your life that need nurturing? Do you have a reasonable understanding of your feelings? (Water)

THE UNIVERSE (Saturn) / Traditional Name: The World
As the final card of the Major Arcana, The Universe typically represents closing a circle, completing a lesson or a journey. With The Universe card, we have finished what we started; we have seen our purpose through to the end.

In my birth chart, the 4th House is where the Sun resides, an indication that my “home” plays a significant role in who and what I am as an individual. Another interesting connection with my birth chart is the fact that in that chart, Saturn is in my First House (House of Self).

The planet Saturn, sometimes called the planet of “lessons and limitations,” is known as a stern taskmaster who constantly turns our attention to reality, duties, and obligations. Position 4 in this spread mentions home environment, nurturing, and understanding one’s feelings. These are things I may not think I need to take responsibility for, but Saturn holds a different view.

In some ways, I have come full circle. As a child growing up, I was fortunate to have a stable home life. I wanted for nothing, and I had a lot of time to pursue creative activities such as writing and music. Then came marriage, motherhood, and a long period when I worked in an office setting 8 hours a day, doing work that was not very fulfilling. Now, I am again in a stable, pleasant home environment, free to express my creativity and imagination in satisfying “work.”

What actions should I take?

A sample reading using
The Animals Divine Tarot by Lisa Hunt
(Llewellyn Publications)

QUESTION: “What actions should I take
to develop my relationship with a loved one?”

LAYOUT

1....2....3

ANSWER

Animals Divine Tarot
Position 1. This is what you need to know.

THE HANGED WOMAN (Water)

On this card, Spider Woman weaves her web. As creator and goddess of many Native American traditions, she has the ability to expose truth despite our possible resistance to acknowledging it. The spider is viewed as a teacher, guide, and weaver of destiny. What you need to know is that life is continuous and ever-evolving. Changes are inevitable. Look at your current situation. Make sure you do not lose sight of your journey’s purpose or get caught in a web of illusion that will hinder progress.

Animals Divine Tarot
Position 2. This is what you need to do.

THREE WANDS (Fire)

On this card, a Toad proudly displays three crystal-topped Wands, representing the components of creative energy. What you need to do is use your creative energy to integrate old and new ideas, past influences and fresh perspectives. The Toad is an adaptive creature, in harmony with its environment. Your ability or inability to adapt to the changes revealed in Position 1 may promote or hinder the development of a relationship.

Animals Divine Tarot
Position 3. This is what you need to avoid.

TEN CUPS (Water)

You need to avoid letting your imagination prematurely create a “happy ever after” scenario. Your feelings for this person seem to be very strong, but trying to leap too far too fast is likely to prove counterproductive. The Whales shown on this card are masters of the sea, which represents levels of consciousness as well as emotion, intuition, and spirituality. They are ancient creatures whose powerful, rhythmic movements remind us that the achievement of goals and dreams takes time and dedication.

What should I look for in the near future?

A sample reading using Ancestral Path Tarot
by Julia Cuccia-Watts

QUESTION
What should I look for in the near future?

LAYOUT

ANSWER

Ancestral Path Tarot
Position 1. Situation: EIGHT OF CUPS

On this card, King Arthur deliberately turns away from everything important to him up to this point. His successes in life seem hollow to him, and he feels drawn to a spiritual quest. This card implies that you are currently dissatisfied with something in your life and would like to make a change or head in a new direction. You have reached a plateau and are contemplating consciously giving something up in return for something else that you hope will be more fulfilling. The suit of Cups is associated with the element Water (emotion, relationships).

Ancestral Path Tarot

Position 2. Challenge: THREE OF SWORDS

On this card, a Samurai knight gallops off to war in full battle regalia. Family and friends witness his departure. The challenge implied by this card involves the sorrow of separation, especially from family and relatives. The suit of Swords is associated with the element Air (thoughts, communication, struggles). There is a sense that you will have to release certain expectations about other people as well as acknowledging your own less-than-successful experiences and laying them to rest. If this is too difficult for you or if you choose not to try, it will be much harder to take the new direction suggested by the Eight of Cups.

Ancestral Path Tarot

Position 3. Opportunity: THE EMPRESS

On this card, a woman sits on a throne, reclining against a crimson cushion. She is obviously pregnant. As Key 3 of the Major Arcana, The Empress has a commanding presence in this spread. Rather than indicating a literal, physical “pregnancy,” The Empress is usually about creativity and “fertility” from the standpoint of being productive in any endeavor. You have an opportunity to create an abundant life filled with new growth and a sense of well-being. Associated with the element Earth, The Empress represents the physical, material world and practicality -- the importance of grounding our dreams and schemes in reality in order to receive tangible results.

The essence of the number 3 is expansion, and therein lies both your challenge (3 of Swords) and opportunity (Key 3, The Empress). The number 8 (8 of Cups) represents both stability and stagnation. It can be very hard to exchange the known for the unknown, even when we are dissatisfied with the known. The cards in this reading indicate great potential for some positive changes in your life.

Reincarnation Reading

Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, I am willing to bet that you at least find the concept interesting, even fascinating. I think the perfect deck to use in an exploration of this theme is the Tarot of Reincarnation, designed by Massimiliano Filadoro (Lo Scarabeo).

Let’s get personal. I am going to ask this wonderful deck three important questions about myself: What was I in a past life? What am I now? What might I be in a future life?

Ready? Here we go!

What was I in a past life?

HAWK / Knave of Spades (Swords)

I was, perhaps, an actual hawk (very cool) or perhaps a human being who was able to identify his objectives, made quick decisions, and swiftly pursue those objectives. I may have been somewhat lacking in compassion, but I was also protective and may have had the role of guardian or messenger.

In The Animal-Wise Tarot by Ted Andrews (Dragonhawk Publishing), the Hawk plays the role of the Knight of Winged Ones (Swords). He notes that hawks “spend three-fourths of their day perched somewhere observing the area around them, searching to detect the subtlest of movements, patiently waiting until the best moment to strike.”

What am I now?

BEETLE / Two of Clubs (Wands)

I love the description of the card from the Little White Book (LWB): “External provocations that can push us to exaggerated reactions as well as reawaken hidden potential.” Which could mean that I act as an “external provocation” that pushes people “to exaggerated reactions” (oh yes, I can see that) or I am the sort of person who is pushed to exaggerated reactions by external provocations (yes, I can see that, too).

Ted Andrews chose the Beetle for his Seven of Shapeshifters (Cups) card. Andrews notes that the Beetle exhibits the energy of being on the right track, pursuing our goals, making decisions. The front wings on a beetle have thickened into hard covers that protect its underside – so we can also see this insect as an indication of being protected or shielded.

What might I be in a future life?

DOG / Seven of Diamonds (Pentacles)

When I look at the illustration on this card, I do not see a dog. I see a fox or possibly a coyote. All three are canids, to be sure, but the symbolism is very different for each of them. The LWB states that this is a Dog, however, indicating that I might be either a dog in a future life or a person who exhibits the qualities of a dog: “blind faith in a person or idea, aggressiveness caused by stress” along with, I might add, loyalty, devotion, and companionship. I could be some man’s “best friend.”

As a child, I used to enjoy pretending to be a dog, crawling around the house, barking and panting. When auditions were held for The Wizard of Oz at the Junior Theater Guild, I wanted very much to play Toto. Instead, I was cast as the Wicked Witch of the West – a much meatier role, to be sure, and great fun for me. My point is that although I prefer to live with cats, I am very much drawn to dogs in all shapes and sizes. There is certainly a connection or “spark” that I feel around them. Precognition, perhaps? One never knows.
