Journey through My Decks: 3 of Swords

In this series of posts, I plan to discuss all of the Tarot cards in order, using a different deck for each card. Today I'm exploring the THREE OF SWORDS from The Wheel of Change Tarot by Alexandra Genetti (Destiny Books).

Three Blades in the Falling Forest

Alexandra Genetti tells us that in the Tarot, the Pips generally symbolize "the day-to-day events of life and the simple lessons we learn in our relationships and actions. . . Each number represents a particular stage in the growth process." She writes: "Three represents synthesis, the action that joins the opposites that were divided in the two." Genetti also views Three as "the number of action and change. . . symbolic of the initiating principle of God the creator or creatrix."

Genetti associates the suit of Swords with the element air, the direction east, the season of spring, and the dawn. The suit "signifies the evolution of the realm of humankind out of the animal kingdom represented in the watery suit of Cups." The Sword, like "our human capacity for individual thought," divides and separates us not only from the animals but from each other. It is "the symbol of the penetrating intelligence and the mental faculties, especially the creative capacity for new ideas." As a masculine suit representing "the active principle and direct movement in the world of ideas," Swords penetrate and make an impression on whatever they touch.

Symbols on the Three of Swords, as described by Genetti:

* Tree saws: the action of cutting through natural elements to build anew
* Fallen tree with exposed rings: dependent layers of life on earth; the body of the earth and our own bodies
* New fir tree springing up: the earth's ability to heal herself in the face of our destructive technology; the need to account for the time that nature needs to recover
* Clear-cut land in distance: what happens when we overstep our bounds and use the earth beyond its ability to return to a productive state

As a Daily Card, the Three of Swords from this deck prompts me to examine how I allocate my own internal resources and energy. For example, should I respond to criticism with argument or with reflection? This card also encourages me to evaluate my uses (or abuses) of my own natural resources (body, emotions, mind, energy).

I may also need to ask myself if I am *hearing* what knowledgeable people are telling me about the use of my resources. Am I carefully considering options and studying the facts before I act?

About the deck: Alexandra Genetti writes that the Wheel of Change cards "express the passion I feel for life, for the earth and her amazing living diversity. They are an expression of the hope I feel that we will one day be able to live immersed in the balance of the natural world." BASIC INFORMATION

This boxed deck includes 78 full-color cards and an LWB (Little White Book / instruction booklet). As with all Lo Scarabeo decks, the LWB has sections written in English, Italian, Spanish, French, and German. Too bad they forgot to include Bassa. (I'm just kidding of course. Some folks really dislike the multilingual nature of Lo Scarabeo decks, but I kind of like it, even if it makes the LWB look like it contains way more information than it does.)

This deck is multi-cultural as well, incorporating "Gothic cathedrals...Dervishes and Maori...yogi...Vikings...dragons, unicorns, minotaurs, and sphinxes...Archangels...Knights Templar..."

Descriptions in the LWB are unique to this deck and provide helpful information in case you would like to further explore the characters or stories behind the images on the cards. For example, for the Eight of Chalices, we read: "The blind diviner Tiresias is transformed into a woman by the magic of snakes intertwined. Sacrifice and disappointment when faced with condemnation." For the Three of Pentacles we have: "The 'at' (@) sign on the screen of a computer in a fractal galaxy. The expansion of ingenious structures." On the Two of Chalices: "The cosmogonical dance twists the energies of the Shinto gods Izanami-No-Mikoto and Izanagi-No-Mikoto into a double helix. Fecundity arises from the encounter."

I like the way this deck encourages the reader to contemplate the relationship between the "traditional" card meanings and the images/stories chosen for each card. The correspondences are clearly appropriate in many cases.

In the LWB we are given The Oracle of the Hermetic Caduceous, a five-card spread with the following positional definitions: The Winged Wand (the roots of the past, the causes of the present), The Knot (the current issue and its potential development), The Black Snake (adverse conditions, obstacles, and blocks), The White Snake (favourable conditions, allies), and The Helmet of Hermes (summary, the final result).

Also in the LWB, each Major Arcana card and each Ace has a Latin phrase assigned to it. For example, The Moon is LUNA MENDAX (the deceitful moon). The Wheel is TERMINUS A QUO, TERMINUS AD QUEM (Starting point, ending point). Temperance is QUANTUM SATIS (just enough). The Ace of Wands is EN TO PAN (All is One).

Suit associations are standard: Chalices/emotions, Pentacles/matter, Wands/creativity, and Swords/the mind.

Many of the Minor Arcana cards feature characters whose names are written next to them on the face of the card. For example, on the Six of Wands we see George Gurdjieff dancing with the Dervishes. Pythagoras appears on the Knave of Pentacles. Our Knave of Swords is Archimedes. Although many male characters are thus identified, only one female character has a name next to her: British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin, who is depicted with Francis Crick and James D. Watson on the Three of Chalices.

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The Tarot of the Mystic Spiral cards measure 2 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches, an easy size to handle and shuffle. They are flexible but not too flimsy, and are printed on glossy stock.

Cards are numbered at the top in blue. The suit name of each card appears in white, in several languages, with English in the upper left corner of each card.

The backs of the cards are dark blue with two circular Celtic-knot style patterns in green, turquoise, and tan. The design incorporates spirals. The backs look the same whether the card is upright or reversed.

ART

Artist Giuseppe Palumbo has worked on various comic books including the well known 'Martin Mystere' series. His art also appears on the Afro-Brazilian Tarot by Alice Santana (Lo Scarabeo). In Tarot of the Mystic Spiral we are again treated to Palumbo's bold, angular (at times bizarre) drawings.

If you were to ask me if I like "comic book style" art, my initial response would be "Not so much." And, indeed, some of the illustrations in the Tarot of the Mystic Spiral turn me off. However, a great many of them appeal to me. As I may have mentioned before, my reaction to the art on a deck is probably the single most important factor in my decision to acquire or not acquire that deck. The images in this deck that put me off are few and far between.

The image from The World card is wrapped around the outside of the box, giving it a sort of "round and round" sensation when you turn the box over and over in your hands.

BOTTOM LINE

If you are a Tarot student who is trying to understand the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith symbolism and interpretations, Tarot of the Mystic Spiral is probably not the deck for you. Likewise, if you are a Tarot reader who prefers strict adherence to RWS style, this deck may not work well for you -- although someone who is well versed in the RWS can *see* references and resemblances in this deck.

I find the LWB descriptions, though brief, to be excellent in terms of describing what or who is shown on the card and in giving a clear idea of how the card might be interpreted in a reading.

One could argue that the diverse paths incorporated into this deck give it an inconsistent *feel* that could make it difficult to obtain a cohesive message from a reading. It could also be difficult to intuit what the card represents if you haven't studied the LWB. Whether this bothers me or not will only become evident after I do a few readings with the deck. In the meantime, I remain favorably impressed.

Death and Grief Reading

I recently experienced the death of a dear friend and colleague of many years. Her funeral is today.

In her honor, I am sharing a spread I adapted from one that was posted by Barbaras Ahajusts on Aeclectic Tarot Forum back in 2006. I hope this provides an example of how Tarot readings can help us cope with death and grief in our lives.

I am using Tarot of the Spirit by Pamela and Joyce Eakins (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.)

1. The deceased:

EARTH MOTHER (Queen of Pentacles)

How true this is! My friend and colleague was a mother-figure to so many people, including and especially (of course) her own children. She mentored younger colleagues (and me, even though we were close to the same age), and her compassion, creativity, and joy in life were noticed by everyone who encountered her.

2. I (the bereaved):

TEMPERANCE

An interesting draw, considering that this is the card associated with my Sun sign, Sagittarius. I really like what Pamela Eakins writes about this card: "The trials and temptations you currently experience will lead you toward integration, the 'middle way,' the path of moderation." That is a very accurate portrayal of how I have become the person I am. This card also suggests spiritual (inner) growth and "a period of profound realization."

3. What united us?

WATER BROTHER (Knight of Cups)

Indeed, I believe we were linked through subconscious influences that brought us into a heart-to-heart relationship. The connection was deep and powerful.

4. Under which sign did our union stand?

THE HIEROPHANT

I don't know for certain what the creator of this spread meant by "sign" but I am interpreting it as "zodiac sign." In the system I currently use, The Hierophant is linked with the sign Taurus (my Moon sign). Taurus is an Earth sign, which suggests an union in the physical, material world. We were brought together initially by our jobs in an institution ("the establishment" sometimes represented by The Hierophant). Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet that rules relationships, love, and appreciation. Venus also rules Libra, my friend's sun sign. The Hierophant is sometimes associated with the astrological 9th House, the house of philosophy and religion (and the house linked with my sun sign, Sagittarius). All of this makes sense to me.

5. What is now gone?

DEATH

How would someone's death mean that "Death" is now gone? I am reminded of the Biblical verse that reads, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" The spectre of death that had hung over my friend since her diagnosis of cancer in April is gone. That threat, that uncertainty about the upcoming transformation is no longer of any concern for her. Her death is over.

6. What remains for me as the gift of our union?

THE MOON

Here I also find myself turning to the words written by Pamela Eakins about this card: "At your darkest hour, you will find that you hold your own light. . . Shedding light on your fears will propel you toward self-understanding, strength and self-confidence. Through this process you will heal and move forward into happiness."

7. Which force is protecting and accompanying me during this period?

THE HANGED MAN

The force that protects and accompanies me during this period is the power of retreat, withdrawal, and contemplation. I am called to enter a meditative state in which I will experience the silence I need to see and hear deeper truths.

8. Which force accompanies the deceased?

SEVEN OF WIND

Titled "Many Tongues" in this deck, this card represents the importance of letting go of old systems or things in which you once believed. As the winds of change sweep over and through my friend, her spirit will learn to express itself in a new language and in new ways.

Edited to add: How interesting that the following lines were sung at my friend's funeral:

"Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above..."
(from the hymn Come Thou Font of Every Blessing by Robert Robinson)

Not only that, my friend loved animals, especially reptiles. During the funeral service, her husband shared more than one anecdote about her involving snakes.

9. Which force helps me to let go and to keep going, gives me new courage, and benefits me?

THE SUN

A powerful force indeed, The Sun illuminates my path as I enter a new stage of life, one that my friend does not share. Unlike some Sun cards, this one has two people on it, holding hands. I feel this refers to a connection between my friend and me at a high level, under the Sun's brilliant light.

I am awed by the power and significance of these cards. I feel that the large number of Major Arcana cards (6 of the 9 cards) reinforces my belief that my friend and I had a soul mate or past life connection. The reading is a comfort to me. It helped me express thoughts and feelings, enabling me to come to terms with my loss.

I am working my way through the numbers, comparing the ways in which I have used them in Tarot readings with observations and comments from numerologists and occultists. I welcome your comments and observations about this fascinating subject!

Tarot Cards: The Emperor, Fours of all suits

FOURS

Writing about the occult meaning of numbers, Paul Foster Case gives the following keywords for Four: "order, measurement, classification, recording, tabulation, and so on." Case goes on to write that "Qabalists make 4 the number of memory" and that "Beneficence ('good-givingness') is also assigned to 4." (The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages, Macoy Publishing Company)

In his book Numerology: Key to the Tarot (Whitford Press), Sandor Konraad writes that in divination, Four can represent achievement, marriage, and excessive concern with material things. In the Minor Arcana, Four is the number of Attainment.

Quoting from Numerology and The Divine Triangle by Faith Javane and Dusty Bunker (Whitford Press): "Four is stability, a 4-square consciousness, the symbol of law, system, and order. It is firmness, security, stability and conservatism. . . 4 is nature and relates to the earth." Key words for Four: "form, work, order, practicality, construction, stability, endurance, discipline."

Gary Meister, CTM offers the key words "Reason, Practicality" for the number Four. He writes: "On a universal level, the creative process can be more or less automatic in its early stages. The beginning thought (#1) gives birth to a cooperation between your individual spirit and the Universal Spirit and creation is begun (#3). But without reason, without turning the creation into something practical (#4) the first three steps just keep happening, over and over, and never become a fully realized reality."

The web site Numberquest.com provides a longer string of key words for the number Four: "Practical, orderly, patient, logical, hard-working, loyal, builder, steadfast, frugal, responsible, earthy, planner, materially creative, green thumb, even tempered."

In Anna Burroughs Cook's Tarot Dynamics system (based in large part on Javane and Bunker): "Subject Card Four stands for incentive and security."

THE EMPEROR (Trump 4)

Concerning The Emperor (Card 4), Cook writes: "The Emperor intensifies your need to discover the truth in all matters . . . You're going to be a little more self-assertive and direct. Control." She notes that Card 4 means "a control issue, at work, home or both may bring your emotions closer to the surface, or cause you to be more protective about matters that impact your sense of belonging and security."

According to Javane and Bunker: "[The Emperor], ruling our conscious existence, represents reason, which is a function of the conscious mind. The Emperor therefore rules over and sets in order the reasoning, conscious elements of the material world. He supervises and controls through his ability to discern the truth in any given situation. It is his wisdom in handling affairs systematically that has placed him upon the throne."

In astrology, the Fourth House is known as the House of Home and Family. Ruled by the zodiac sign Cancer, known as a sensitive, self-protective sign. The house where Cancer appears on our birth chart indicates the area of life where we search for security.

Today's Cards and Quotes features the SIX OF WANDS from Tarot of the Animal Lords by Angelo Giannini (Lo Scarabeo).

Sometimes referred to as "the victory card," the Six of Wands usually depicts a conquering hero surrounded by fanfare and flags. Tarot of the Animal Lords offers a very different perspective on this card. The image makes me think of the expression "tooting your own horn" (as in being overly prideful). I am pairing it today with another saying that seems appropriate.

BASIC INFORMATION

This set contains 54 cards and a 153-page Guidebook packaged together in an attractive, very sturdy box.

The Guidebook contains an Introduction by the author and a section on How to Use the Cards, which includes The Purpose of the Cards, How to Do a Reading, Sample Readings, an Explanation of the Positions for 1-card, 3-card, and 6-card readings, and The Soul's Intention.

Soul's Intention: The author tells us that each card "depicts the soul's intention as well as the other positional meanings discussed in the previous section." The Soul's Intention aspect of this deck could be used with any deck of Tarot or Oracle cards. In the author's words: "The soul's intention is for you to grow, and it will show you the lessons you must learn in order to evolve into who you're meant to become." The Seeker can either pull a card to answer "What is my soul's intention regarding the present situation?" or can contemplate the last card drawn in a reading for this purpose.

Following the introductory material, each card is discussed in turn. Instead of key words, the author provides a statement or affirmation that conveys the basic message of the card. For example, for Card 9, Storm Fields, the message is "This, too, shall pass." For Card 29, Coming to Life, the message is "Something beautiful is being born in your life."

The author gives Upright and Reversed meanings for each card. She writes that upright cards "represent the purest and most positive energy." About reversals, she notes: "Reversed cards are powerful and should never be seen as negative; rather, they serve to shed the most light on your areas of inquiry."

The text in the Guidebook is written in a conversational tone with a touch of humor, and is easy to understand. There is a sense that the author is speaking directly to the reader, one-on-one, which I find quite engaging. For example, under reversed meanings for Card 27, Home, we have: "If you don't feel at home, it's time to do a thorough and fearless inventory. What are you hiding from? Are you afraid of being yourself? Do you feel that you don't belong where you are? What if you choose another path?"

An internationally acclaimed intuitive counselor, Colette Baron-Reid is a motivational speaker, performer, and storyteller. She is the author of several other books and decks, including Wisdom of the Hidden Realms Oracle Cards, The Wisdom of Avalon Oracle Cards, Messages From Spirit: The Extraordinary Power of Oracles, Omens, and Signs, Remembering the Future, and The Map (all published by Hay House). APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The Enchanted Map Oracle cards measure 5" x 3.5", an easy size to handle and shuffle, and are printed on sturdy, glossy stock. The edges are trimmed in gold, giving the deck an elegant appearance.

Cards are numbered at the top in white. The title of each card appears in white at the bottom, printed on what looks like a piece of ancient parchment or scroll. Each card is framed in a textured pale gold pattern.

The backs of the cards are pale minty green. A mirrored image of the compass (from Card 50) is placed in the center. The backs look the same whether the card is upright or reversed.

ART

I was unfamiliar with Jena DellaGrottaglia's art before receiving this deck. After seeing what she did with The Enchanted Map Oracle, I spent quite a lot of time viewing her work at http://autumnsgoddess.deviantart.com/ and http://www.fantasyartfanatics.com/jena-dellagrottaglia.html . Do yourself a favor and go take a look. Her art is mesmerizing, captivating, and any other high-praise adjective you care to apply.

For The Enchanted Map Oracle, DellaGrottaglia created a set of rich, vibrant pieces of art. They evoke a complete range of emotions. Some are whimsical, like the illustration on Card 38, Heal the "Ouch," which features a raccoon in a Red Cross cap tending to a fox with an ice pack on its head. The background on the card is rosy pink and dappled, suggesting health and happiness to come. The author's message on this card is "Forgiveness is the healer of the soul."

Other cards that feature animals include Card 54, Encouragement, which depicts a mother giraffe and baby. On Card 53, Listening, an elephant with bowed head appears to be listening to musical notes that dance in the air. Card 25, Metamorphosis, features flamingoes with butterfly wings. On Card 28, Movement, an ostrich journeys across an open landscape, carrying a patch of ground with a windmill on its back.

The background for Card 50 -- Compass -- is painted in bright shades of turquoise, teal, and blue. The compass is rich gold, burgundy, and brown. A tiny frog perches on the edge. Zodiac symbols parade in a circle. In the center we see flames and smoke. There is mystery and power here, a feeling of uncharted territory ahead.

Some images are light and airy; others are dark and moody, in keeping with the nature of the card. Card 17, Ghostlands; Card 19, Dragon's Lair; and Card 26, Deep Freeze, send a chill right up my spine.

Whether the card features human beings, animals, or inanimate objects, there is always a keen sense of place -- appropriate since we are dealing with an enchanted map.

BOTTOM LINE

This is my first Colette Baron-Reid product, but probably won't be my last. I have not yet read with this deck, but I will soon, and will post outcomes here with a link under this review. I really like the author's tone in the guidebook -- straightforward, frank, and realistic. Don't expect empty platitudes or pats on the head with this book or deck. You're going to be encouraged to think, feel, analyze, and explore.

Thanks to Jena DellaGrottaglia's amazing art, each of these cards can serve as a meditation tool, leading the seeker into wondrous inner and outer worlds. I know everybody borrows Dr. Seuss, but I'm going to do it anyway: "Oh, the places you'll go" with The Enchanted Map Oracle Cards!

Today's edition of 5W's and an H features The Dragon Tarot by Nigel Suckling, illustrated by Roger and Linda Garland (Cico Books).

To refresh your memory: For the 5W's and an H exercise, we use one Tarot card to answer the questions Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? As an additional requirement, each answer can be only one phrase or sentence. The idea is to respond intuitively, without a lot of description or explanation.

The card: The Hanged Man

Who? Someone who is taking time out to gain a fresh perspective.

What? Patience and sacrifice

When? When you are at a crossroads or decision-making point

Where? In a different mind set

Why? Because you need to look at things from a different point of view

I finally found time to take this little spread for a spin. With permission from Karen Mahony at Baba Studio (Magic Realist Press), I am using the marvelous Fantastic Menagerie Tarot, based on images by J.J. Grandville. Here we go.

1st Quarter (Jan.-Mar.)

PAGE OF COINS

The card of the student or apprentice is an interesting representative for the first quarter of 2012. In a sense, I am an eternal student, constantly learning and taking on new things, as well as learning new things about areas I have already studied. It is a role I expect to play quite happily into my dotage. At the same time, I have also learned enough that I can teach what I have learned to others, something I am doing more of in 2012.

2nd Quarter (Apr.-Jun.)

JUSTICE

I really hope this doesn't represent going to court. Not my favorite thing to do by a long shot. This card may be more about "responsibility and accountability" (two of the keywords given to it in The Fantastic Menagerie book by Sophie Nussle). The image on the card is not reassuring to me in any case. I fear I may be "called on the carpet" to defend myself for a decision or choice I have made. Or -- and this one I like -- maybe I will receive justice in a situation where I feel I have been wronged. Perhaps I will call someone else on the carpet?

3rd Quarter (Jul.-Sep.)

THE TOWER

Egads. I know we're not supposed to *hate* The Tower, but I'm just not a big fan of sudden shocks and catastrophes. It looks like maybe I should do a thorough assessment of my life so that maybe I can change something before it's changed for me in a rude manner. Of course, whatever it is may be beyond my control. After the day I've had today, I can all too easily imagine a couple of scenarios. I think I would prefer to experience an unexpected gain (rather than loss) or have an astonishing flash of inspiration.

4th Quarter (Oct.-Dec.)

QUEEN OF SWORDS

Ah, Madame de Rapiere. What is she doing here? Is she a person who will have a strong influence in my life during this quarter? Or am I being encouraged to study her qualities in order to adopt her more positive traits myself? How might I describe "a Queen of Swords quarter"? There may be an emphasis on intellectual pursuits or mental activity.

THE HANGED MAN

I can see how this card might relate to each of the "quarterly cards." Looking at something from a different angle could be just the ticket to get me through some of the more challenging situations. I may choose to sacrifice one thing in order to gain something else. A time of "suspension" may be necessary to keep my sanity. The bottom line for me is that even though The Hanged Man doesn't appear to be suffering, I can't believe it's a comfortable position to be in. In fact, I see quite a bit of discomfort in the other four cards. It doesn't look like I'm going to be gliding smoothly through the year!

From a numerology standpoint, my Personal Year is 35/8. In Numerology and the Divine Triangle (Whitford Press), Faith Javane and Dusty Bunker tell me that in a 35/8 Personal Year, "almost anything can happen" and I need to "be prepared for whatever comes." They also advise me that "the pressures of this period will affect your health only if you work and worry too much." What, me worry? Oh, sorry. Sometimes I confuse myself with Alfred E. Newman.

Things could get interesting.

Journey through My Decks: 2 of Swords

In this series of posts, I plan to discuss all of the Tarot cards in order, using a different deck for each card. Today I'm exploring the TWO OF SWORDS from the Osho Zen Tarot (published by St. Martin's Press. Illustrations by Ma Deva Padma).

In the Osho Zen Tarot, the suit of Clouds (Swords) represents Knowledge, Thoughts, and Mind. The Two of Clouds represents a state of mind that is divided, confused about which option to choose. Looking closely at the card, we see a human figure, face down, with his fingers on the top of one looming object and his toes on the top of another. His body hangs between the two. What are his choices? Should he let his arms go and fall head-first, or let his legs go and fall feet-first?

The commentary presented in the Osho Zen Tarot book responds: "The only way out of this dilemma is, unfortunately, to let go of both at once. You can't work your way out of this one by solving it, making lists of pros and cons, or in any way working it out with your mind. Better to follow your heart, if you can find it."

Everyday choices we make can be seen as reflections of a much larger choice that impacts every aspect of our lives. Osho writes: "You are born in a schizophrenic world. You have been given double standards. You have been taught materialism, and you have been taught spirituality, together. The whole society goes on teaching you contradictory things."

There is some consolation in discovering that there is no one correct "solution" to a dilemma, that it's time to let instinct, intuition, or feelings make the decision instead of the intellect. The other option -- to remain suspended between two options -- is probably not an option at all. Sooner or later, we will make a choice out of sheer exhaustion, and that may not be in anyone's best interest.

About the Deck: A native of India, Osho (a name he adopted in later life) was a highly controversial spiritual teacher who (according to his epitaph) was "Never Born, Never Died. Only Visited this Planet Earth between Dec 11 1931 - Jan 19 1990" (A Sagittarius. I should have known.) The deck's artist, Deva Padma (Susan Morgan), is an American who lived as part of the community that surrounded Osho. Based on the teachings of Osho, the Osho Zen Tarot is "a wake-up call to tune in to sensitivity, intuition, compassion, receptivity, courage and individuality." (from the book packaged with the deck)

With the Year 2012 fast approaching, I thought I would share a reading using a spread I created called Covering All the Angles. You can read more about this spread HERE.

Because this particular reading looks ahead into 2012, I changed the positional definitions slightly from the original. I am using the Mystic Dreamer Tarot by Heidi Darras, with its companion book by Barbara Moore (Llewellyn Publications). I am also incorporating key words and input from Tarot Dynamics by Anna Burroughs Cook (Kima Global Publishers).

EIGHT OF WANDS
Tarot Dynamics: card 34 - Changeable / Renovation
Eight active, enthusiastic, optimistic Wands all point in the same direction, appearing to shower their energy over the woman on the card. The woman herself is poised to move. The dynamic energy of this card may work in my favor, perhaps by propelling me towards greater self-awareness or a closer relationship with my highest self.

2. Self - what may work against me in 2012
ACE OF SWORDS
Tarot Dynamics: card 55 - Crisis or Reward
On this card, the single Sword suggests single-mindedness, and the ornate crown and hilt suggest a well-established, dominant energy. The masculine suit of Swords emphasizes rationality and reason. I get a sense of a new point of view that may inhibit self-development and growth. Tarot Dynamics mentions the possibility of "an unhealthy mix of ego, temper, and principle."

3. Self - advice/forecast
THE LOVERS
Tarot Dynamics: card 6 - Harmony
Here I get the sense that there will be a decision or choice that may impact my self-development or self-awareness. In making that decision or choice, I will want to examine my reasons and motivations. I will want to try to bring my conscious thoughts and subconscious thoughts into balance, and seek input from my higher self. As a result, I may gain a better understanding of myself.

4. Home and Family - what may work in my favor in 2012
TWO OF PENTACLES
Tarot Dynamics: card 70 - Ambitious/Interaction
An ability to juggle multiple tasks in the area of home and family may work in my favor in 2012. The emphasis with Pentacles is on money, possessions, health, and values. At any given time, I may find myself balancing my time and energy among such things, whether they relate to me personally or to a family member.

5. Home and Family - what may work against me in 2012
THE HIGH PRIESTESS
Tarot Dynamics: card 2 - Passion
This card suggests that concealing knowledge or "keeping secrets" could work against me in the area of Home and Family. Whether I am withholding information or someone else is keeping something from me, the effect is likely to be injurious. The High Priestess may also indicate that harm could be caused by a failure to understand and trust my intuition, an inability or unwillingness to seek wisdom within myself before taking action. Tarot Dynamics mentions that "relationships will experience some degree of reconstruction and re-evaluation."

6. Home and Family - advice/forecast
SEVEN OF CUPS
Tarot Dynamics: card 47 - Emotional / Relationships
This card usually represents being emotionally attracted to many different choices, unable to choose which one(s) to pursue. I get a sense that I may have to discern which of these options would be beneficial or wise. All that glitters is not gold. I can reduce confusion by eliminating choices that are superfically appealing but not really in my best interests. Tarot Dynamics mentions uncertainty and the possibility of overestimating or underestimating something or someone.

7. Relationships and Partnerships - what may work in my favor in 2012
ACE OF CUPS
Tarot Dynamics: card 41 - Crisis or Reward
This feels like an encouraging, promising card to see in this position. The energy here is loving, joyful, and fulfilling. Being open to this abundance and willing to embrace it will work in my favor in the area of relationships and partnerships. Tarot Dynamics mentions working constructively with emotions to make the time period productive and rewarding.

8. Relationships and Partnerships - what may work against me in 2012
THE STAR
Tarot Dynamics: card 17 - Hope
It appears that what may work against me in the area of relationships and partnerships could be an inability or unwillingness to receive the transformative, uplifting, hopeful energy manifested by this card. If I allow everyday trials and tribulations to distract me or weigh me down, I will not be able to enjoy the powerful blessings The Star conveys. Tarot Dynamics mentions the possibility that an overabundance of any emotion could cause me to misinterpret my intuition.

9. Relationships and Partnerships - advice/forecast
JUSTICE
Tarot Dynamics: card 11 - Balance
The theme of "choices" or "decisions" in this reading continues in the area of advice/forecast for relationships and partnerships. Justice advises me to rely on logic and reason rather than emotions when making choices in this area. Ultimately, fairness is key. There is a need for balance and an even hand, as opposed to knee-jerk reactions or irrational responses.

10. Career - what may work in my favor in 2012
ACE OF WANDS
Tarot Dynamics - card 27 - Crisis or Reward
As a card of creative opportunity, the Ace of Wands bodes well for career matters in 2012. My career development is supported by fiery, active, optimistic energy. Tarot Dynamics mentions major changes as circumstance and personal aspirations require me to harness my willpower with a positive attitude and blaze my own trail.

11. Career - what may work against me in 2012
TWO OF SWORDS
Tarot Dynamics: card 56 - Challenging / Interaction
Conflicating ideas or perspectives may work against me in the area of Career. I may further compound the problem by refusing to face this challenge. Even if I do acknowledge the conflict, I may find it difficult to be rational. Tarot Dynamics mentions the possibility of irrational fears and anxieties that arise when I least expect them, and the potential for allowing impatience and frustration to control my behavior.

12. Career - advice/forecast
KNIGHT OF WANDS
Tarot Dynamics: card 25 - Changeable Adventure
In this position, the Knight of Wands offers great support with his generousity and ambition. He can also cause trouble by being impetuous or impulsive. There is a caution here about losing patience with some aspect of my career, and dashing off to pursue something new. The key is to channel this Knight's fiery energy, while curbing any tendency to make grand but empty gestures. Tarot Dynamics mentions the importance of staying flexible and going with the flow when prudent.

A FEW GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ON THIS READING

I notice that MAJOR ARCANA cards appear in all segments except the Career segment. This could suggest that I will be affected at a high spiritual level in the other three areas of life, but perhaps not Career.

The reading contains three ACES -- one for each segment except Self. Sounds like a lot of new opportunities will be offered.

EARTH appears less than any other element in this reading. This could suggest less activity or impact in the material and physical realm.

There are five AIR cards, indicating that thoughts, ideas, perceptions, and communication are likely to play a significant role in 2012.

Writing about the occult meaning of numbers, Paul Foster Case gives the following keywords for Three: "multiplication, development, growth, unfoldment, therefore expression." (The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages, Macoy Publishing Company)

In his book Numerology: Key to the Tarot (Whitford Press), Sandor Konraad writes: "Three is a number of self-expression, creativity and sharing."

Quoting from Numerology and The Divine Triangle by Faith Javane and Dusty Bunker (Whitford Press): "Three combines the qualities of 1 and 2. . . carrying the qualities of manifestation and self-expression. . . If any of the numbers could be called happy-go-lucky, it would be the effervescent 3." Key words for Three: "expansive, sociable, dramatic, communicative, diversified, creative."

Gary Meister, CTM offers the key words "creativity, expansion" for the number Three. He writes: "[Number Three] is the creation itself; the expansion of the original idea into concrete form. . . Three means either use your creativity or expand upon what you have been doing."

The web site Numberquest.com provides a much longer string of key words for the number Three: "Trinity, Union of Divine plus Human, Manifestation, Positive, Negative and Neutral, Expression, Subconscious Mind/Imagination, Creative, Optimistic, Enthusiasm, Expressive, Charming, Humor, Fun, Attractive, Friendly."

In Anna Burroughs Cook's Tarot Dynamics system: "Subject Card Three is for thinking and networking."

THE EMPRESS (Trump 3)

Concerning The Empress (Card 3), Cook writes: "The Empress can help smooth or improve your communications and develop new or better connections."

According to Javane and Bunker: "The Empress is also an aspect of the subconscious mind. While the High Priestess, number 2, is memory, in number 3 we find the subconscious response to that memory which produces growth through the imagination. . . The conscious mind, key 1, cannot produce; the subconscious mind, key 2, cannot reason; it takes a combination of 1 and 2 to produce manifestation, or key 3."

The number Three is sacred to many spiritual paths. One of my favorite possessions is a pamphlet called Druidic Triads by W. Faraday (Sure Fire Press), organized by subject. For example, one entry under the heading "Of the Rewards of Virtue" reads: "Three things which the humble will gain: plenty, joy, and the love of their neighbours."

Here's a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin: "There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one's self."

BASIC INFORMATION

The Woodland Wisdom Oracle deck consists of 29 illustrated cards, including 24 Working Wisdom Cards for inspirational guidance and 5 Gold Power Cards to reinforce the power delivered by these messengers. Detailed instructions about what to do when reading these cards are provided in the LWB. We begin by placing ourselves in the most relaxed state possible. Rev. Munro recommends that only three cards be chosen from the 24 Working Cards for a reading because "picking more than three cards will only confuse you rather than bring clarity."

Reversed cards are read as emphasizing the message and showing its importance to the situation being explored. If you pick two cards at once by mistake, use them both, even though you will end up with more than three cards total in that reading. A Power Card is drawn at the end to bring the reader greater awareness of the power within and how it can be developed further.

The message for each card offered as a direct quote from the character on the card. Rev. Munro also gives us a paragraph explaining who each character is what his or her gifts are. Sample Readings "from two very different and real people" are provided at the end of the LWB.

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The Woodland Wisdom Oracle cards measure 3.5" x 4.75", an easy size to handle and shuffle, and are printed on sturdy, glossy stock.

The cards are not numbered. Each card has a white border, and the images are framed in lime green. Titles are printed in black on lime green at the bottom of each card. The backs of the cards feature a mandala of mushrooms and dragonflies set against a lime green background. The images on the fronts of the cards are alive with many vibrant colors and shimmery areas of light that convey the magic of these woodland residents.

ART

I have long been an admirer of fantasy artist Peter Pracownik's work, particularly in The Dragon Tarot (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) He also created the artwork for the Imperial Dragon Oracle and The Lord of the Rings Tarot, both published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

The female characters in the Woodland Wisdom deck have long, flowing hair, with the exception of the Willow Fairy, who wears her hair twined with flowers and piled on top of her head. The females wear purple, white, pink, orange, blue, and many other colors. The males (somewhat underrepresented at 6) are all dressed in green. Everyone has shimmery white gossamer wings. Pracownik has given the characters distinct personalities that we can see in their faces and their poses.

One card is very different from the others. Spirit of the Mighty Oak features a "green man" face surrounded by branches and leaves. No wings in sight. This card encourages us to attune ourselves with the trees.

Birds, butterflies and other insects, fish and/or mammals are found on almost every card. Other details include beautiful flowers of many kinds, mushrooms, trees, rocks, bubbles, and bodies of water.

BOTTOM LINE

I see the Woodland Wisdom deck as a soothing, supportive deck that offers a great deal of encouragement and gentle advice intended to make our lives happier and more satisfying. With the deck being titled "Woodland Wisdom," I thought perhaps there might be a greater variety of magical woodland creatures depicted. This deck has fairies, elves, and a leprechaun -- but lacks a sprite, pixie, or gnome. On the other hand, the amount of detail encourages meditation and careful exploration of each card, which I like in a deck. Among my favorite cards are the Snowdrop Fairy with her bunny friends, the Fairy of Evening Dusk stretching luxuriously in the moonlight, and the Fairy of Golden Light with her unicorn.

Tarot Dynamics: Personal Enlightenment Reading

I love learning new methods of reading the cards, and Anna Burroughs Cook's Tarot Dynamics approach is one of my favorites. I'm still learning this method, but one way to learn is to put it into practice.

To increase my understanding of this system, I decided to do the three-card Personal Enlightenment spread that Anna provides in the back of her book, Tarot Dynamics (Kima Global Publishers). Anna graciously agreed to review and comment on my interpretation of my reading.

I used the Universal Waite deck (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) Below are the positional definitions for the spread, the cards I pulled, my interpretation, and Anna's comments:

(1) State of Affairs / Hindsight: CARD 74 - SIX OF PENTACLES

Representing Ambition (or Ambitious Initiative) in Anna's system, Pentacles are usually associated with financial and professional advancement, material acquisition, material rewards and/or material crisis. This suit is commonly about "reaping harvest, breaking new ground, or planting new seeds."

The key word for the number Six in Anna's system is Commitment. Sixes deal with "your general health, your daily routine and your willingness to make whatever changes may be necessary to keep matters running more smoothly, efficiently and harmoniously."

Anna's key words for Card 74 (Six of Pentacles) are Ambitious/Commitment. In her Introduction to Tarot Dynamics, Anna recommends developing your own key words for each card, based on what you "feel" when you see that card. My key words for Card 74 (Six of Pentacles) are Generous Nature.

To me, this card in this position represents certain elements of my past that continue to influence the present. These elements that play a significant role in who I am and the path I am on today. Ambition, Commitment, and Generosity are interwoven into the fabric of my current life. Interestingly, the Golden Dawn astrological association for this card is Moon in Taurus, the location of the Moon in my birth chart.

(2) Self / Insight: CARD 10 - WHEEL OF FORTUNE

As a Major Arcana card, the Wheel of Fortune is a card of Personal Transformation in Anna's system. It tests, rewards, and replenishes my strength of character. A Major Arcana card here suggests that I am grappling with matters that are karmic in origin.

ANNA: Ah, but what IS Karma Zanna, if not cause and effect, - as simple as knowing when to leave well-enough alone, or finally stepping up to the plate to confront a matter we’ve been avoiding.

Anna's key word for this card is Opportunity. My key words are Inevitability of Change. To my mind, "Opportunity" puts a more positive spin on the Wheel, whereas my key words could go either way. In any case, I feel this card in this position is about the internal ups and downs I experience, and reminds me that just because an opportunity escapes me today, it doesn't necessarily mean it's gone forever or that another opportunity won't arise.

The Wheel of Fortune is also one of my birth cards, the other being The Magician. Card 10 is associated with the planet Jupiter in the Golden Dawn system, and Jupiter rules my sun sign. So -- it just seems appropriate that this card would show up in the Self / Insight position.

(3) Challenges / Foresight: CARD 23 - KING OF WANDS

Anna defines the word challenge as "a matter of circumstance that requires our immediate attention."

Representing Change in Anna's system, Wands can promote changes that lead to personal renewal by helping me accept the necessity of making some changes and adapting to others.

In Anna's system, all Kings "trigger or enhance your personal initiative." Her key words for Card 23 - King of Wands are Changeable Initiative. My key words are Confident Leadership.

To me, the King of Wands suggests a formidable challenge, so I'm grateful to be given the foresight to know that such a challenge may arise. I get the sense that I may be challenged to demonstrate Changeable Initiative and/or Confident Leadership. I will need to avoid being too impulsive or impatient in this. Alternatively, a challenge might come from a person in authority who takes the initiative to create change that I do not desire. There is a feeling that I may have to act under pressure or "fight Fire with Fire."

Based on Anna's Tarot Dynamics method, my Personal Enlightenment reading has an interesting mix of Ambition/Commitment, Opportunity, and Changeable Initiative. It feels like a natural progression from establishing a foundation, to being presented with an opportunity, to exercising the initiative to take advantage of that opportunity.

ANNA: Dear Zanna, I would like to add that (from Page 79 in your present copy of TD) like Fire, Wands are all about new growth and new opportunities to “blaze your own trail – which IS exactly what you’re doing now. Not to mention how many other ideas you are going to come up in this next year concerning your present writings..I’m certain that you’ll be ”blazing your own trail” in more ways than one.

2 of Swords - Astrological Associations

Astrological associations for the Minor Arcana cards typically involve both a planet and a zodiac sign. The attributions established by the Order of the Golden Dawn (OGD) are by far the most commonly used. However, some Tarot decks and Tarot readers use a different set of associations.

As a professional astrologer, I find it interesting to compare and contrast these associations from deck to deck. The use of astrological associations with Tarot is completely up to the reader. This is merely intended to be interesting and fun.

Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley

For Crowley and the Order of the Golden Dawn (OGD), the Two of Swords is linked with the placement of the Moon (emotions, the subconscious) in Libra (a Cardinal Air sign known for being peaceable, artistic, and socially adept). Crowley titles the card Peace. He writes: "The Moon is change, but Nature is peaceful; moreover, Libra represents balance; between them, they regulate the energy of the Swords."

Hajo Banzhaf and Brigitte Theler (in Keywords for the Crowley Tarot) describe the energy of the card as: "Balanced, peaceful (Libra) feelings (Moon); need (Moon) for harmony (Libra)."

The Whispering Tarot by Liz Hazel

Liz Hazel's astrological associations for the Two of Swords align with those of Crowley and the OGD: Moon/Libra. Hazel's DM related to the Moon include "Hidden or unknown information; choices obscured and require patience to sort through all possibilities. . . Information that may not be true." Libra's influence is seen in the DMs, "Sitting on a fence about a decision. . . Refusal to settle on a choice because of a conflict of interest in the matter."

One World Tarot by Crystal Love

Crystal Love associates the Two of Swords with the first subdivision of Gemini, along with its natural ruler, Mercury, and subruler, Jupiter. She writes: "Jupiter adds a thoughtful and expansive tone fo the Mercurial Gemini. It gives a kind and generous disposition and adds self-confidence. . . However, a profusion of ideas requires sound judgment through which to filter the numerous impressions that pour in, and a misuse of faculties should be avoided at all costs."

The Mandala Astrological Tarot by A.T. Mann

Mann associates the Swords Two with the energy of Venus in Libra. Mann calls Swords Two, Three, and Four "The Winds of Libra," and links Sword Two with the period between September 23 and October 2. The color green is associated with both Libra and Venus on the King Scale of Color.

Mann's divinatory meanings for Sword Two: "A harmonious relationship is founded on art, love and perfect balance." Reversed: "Scattered affections created by overidealizing the loved one."

The Tarot and Astrology by David Thornton

Like A.T. Mann, David Thornton associates the Two of Swords with the placement of the planet Venus (planet of love and appreciation) in the Seventh House (House of Marriage and Partnership). As David explains: "Each of the minor cards is attributed to a decanate -- a 10 degree division of the zodiac. The 2, 3 and 4 of Swords are attributed to Libra/7th house. The 1st decanate is ruled by the ruler of the sign -- in the case of the 2 of swords the ruler is Venus. Venus is sociable, friendly, cooperative and accomodating. The 7th house is the house of partnership, relationships and marriage."

Further connections that come to my mind include the fact that the Second House in astrology is associated with the sign Taurus, ruled by Venus, and the fact that the Seventh House is associated with the sign Libra, an Air sign (in keeping with the association of the suit of Swords with Air). Libra is also ruled by Venus, which gives an overall harmonious vibe to the Two of Swords. David Thornton's description of the energy of the Two of Swords is: "Friendly, obliging, a time to enjoy social engagements and pleasures, to express good taste and artistic skill, scattered emotions or affections."

Oh, and look at how the figure on the card below is holding the two swords -- in a V shape. My first reaction is, "V for Venus! David is right!"

Tarot Dynamics System by Anna Burroughs Cook

In Anna Cook's TD system, Subject Card Two signifies Interaction. The key word for the suit of Swords in this system is Challenging, which gives us Challenging/Interaction for the Two of Swords. In astrology the Second House is commonly known as the House of Possessions. Lest we think this applies only to material possessions, I will quote the gurus at www.astrology.com: "We own our feelings and emotions, as well as our inner selves, abilities, needs and wants. When we own up to something, we are in fact claiming ownership of our greatest possession, our self." Ultimately, we're talking about values. What we "possess" and what we do with those "possessions" has a powerful effect -- for better or worse -- on our Interactions with other people.

A.E. Thierens, PhD. (Astrology & the Tarot)

Thierens associates the Two of Swords with "The element Earth on the Second house." He writes: "By virtue of the Venusian qualities of the Taurus-house, this Saturnian and Martian element, as will easily be understood, leads up to the magnetic affinity of the sexes, consequently to intimacy, attraction, affection, etc." Thierens points out that the less desirable attributes of the sign Taurus may also make themselves known in this card: "We see in such cases the possibility of stupid resistance, dullness, cruelty, relentless opposition and recreation, passive obstruction, perhaps silent, unforgiving hatred."

(Note: The system devised by Thierens is radically different from that of the OGD. I will not go into detail here, but will simply provide the astrological associations for the card under discussion. If you are interested in learning more about this system, I recommend the book referenced above.)

BASIC INFORMATION

Paulina Cassidy is the creator of several decks, including the Paulina Tarot (U.S. Games Systems Inc.), the Joie de Vivre Tarot, and two new decks for 2012: The Witchlings deck of spells (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.) and The Faerie Guidance Deck (Llewellyn Worldwide).

The name of this deck -- Joie de Vivre -- means "joy of life" in French, although I am told that the English translation doesn't really convey the irrepressible spirit inherent in the expression. As the Introduction to the LWB for this deck puts it: "The Joie de Vivre tarot deck is designed to access the child-like energy in each one of us to help stimulate, enhance, and inspire joy in our own lives."

As a Sagittarius, I'm all for "child-like energy." According to the attributes developed by the Order of the Golden Dawn, my Sun-sign card is Temperance, and Paulina Cassidy does not disappoint with her depiction of Lady Temperance. I love that one side of her hair is fiery red and the other watery blue, and that she has the Sun on one side of her belly and the Moon on the other. She has four arms and is thus able to hold a tragedy mask in one hand and a comedy mask in another. In her third hand, she holds a beaker into which she pours liquid from the test tube in her fourth hand.

The deck has the standard 78 Tarot cards, with the Major Arcana, Court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King), and pips (Wands, Swords, Cups, and Coins).

The artist has given each of the cards in this deck -- Majors, Minors, and Courts -- a name. For example, The Fool is called Jaunt; the Four of Cups is Melancholique; and the Queen of Swords is Queen Tenacious.

The 59-page Little White Book that comes with the Joie de Vivre deck provides Keywords for each card, a description/story about the character on each card, interpretation/advice offered by each card, and Reversed divinatory meanings.

For example, in the entry for The Wheel (Wheel of Fortune), we have:

Keywords: Change, revolution, cycles, movement, fortune

Then we have a paragraph that begins: "Juggling the moon cycles, Orbit embodies the spirit of constant change, infinitely setting a new tempo in life's heartbeat as he shifts forward from season to season..."

Next is a paragraph of interpretation that begins: "Your actions have a direct correlation to what happens in the future. Seek and recognize the cycles of life, for every turning point effects a personal transformation in circumstance and perspective..."

Finally, we have "Reversed: Missing opportunities. Resisting change. A bad run of luck."

A 6-card spread called "Spreading the Joy" appears at the end of the LWB. Unlike most spreads, this one has a "card zero" (the Fool's position). I'm looking forward to doing this reading with the Joie de Vivre deck and sharing it here on Tarot Notes.

The last page of the LWB is a brief bio of Paulina Cassidy.

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The 2.75 x 4.75 cards are printed on quality card stock with a slick, glossy finish. They are packaged with the LWB in a snug-fitting cardboard box.

A white border frames the images on the card fronts. The titles are at the bottom of each card, printed in an attractive, easy-to-read script font.

The reversible backs of the cards are shades of yellow and gold with vines that curl and twist in all directions.

I have heard some Tarot readers complain about the slick surface of these cards, which apparently makes them difficult to riffle shuffle. I don't ever use that type of shuffle with my cards. I found it very easy to do a push-pull shuffle with them. It was also easy to lay them out on a table and mix them up.

ART

Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Paulina Cassidy began illustrating editorial cartoons for local newspapers at age 14. At 18 she began illustrating for various magazines. I would describe her illustrations in the Joie de Vivre Tarot as fanciful, beguiling, quirky, and whimsical. I want Cassidy to illustrate Alice in Wonderland! Her style is perfect for a book like that.

Generally speaking, the colors are soft and muted. Although there are exceptions, blues and greens are emphasized in the Cups cards; the Wands feature gold; Coins cards have a lot of brown and green in them; and the Swords cards have quite a lot of blue and lavender. Cassidy has included the perfect amount of detail in these cards, just enough to contemplate.

BOTTOM LINE

I confess I am utterly charmed by this deck. Every one of these cards makes me smile and tilt my head to one side like a curious cat. Some of them have a deliciously sinister undertone that only makes them more compelling to me. The characters are unique in appearance, yet clearly connected to traditional Tarot card meanings through their names and the symbolism incorporated into each card. However, if you prefer a stricter adherence to the Rider-Waite-Smith imagery, you may not appreciate what Cassidy has done with this deck.

The Queen and the Sow

Two of my favorite decks are The DruidCraft Tarot and the Druid Animal Oracle. From time to time, I am going to do a two-card reading with these two decks.

(Please Note: I am aware that the DruidCraft deck is not strictly a "Druid" deck. The word "Craft" in the title alerts us to the fact that this deck incorporates both Wicca and Druidry.)

For this reading, I simply asked the cards what I need to be aware of today.

The positional definitions are:

Not only... QUEEN OF WANDS
Key Words: Dynamic, Confident, Strong-willed

With my Sun in Sagittarius, I often view this lady as my significator. All Queens in this deck symbolize "Creativity, Compassion, Awareness, Nurturing." The suit of Wands is the suit of Fire: "intuitive and dynamic."

But also... SOW
Key Words: Generosity, Nourishment, Discovery

Like all the Druid Animal Oracle cards, this one is rich in detail and symbolism. In addition to the sow and her piglets, we have fields of wheat and barley, the Hill of Tara (Pig Island), sow-thistle, and deadly nightshade (which pigs can supposedly eat without harm). In Druid lore, the pig represents the Goddess. Druids were referred to as "piglets." The Sow is linked with the element Earth and has the gifts of Fertility and Creativity.

My Interpretation:

These two cards complement each other very nicely. Both clearly depict "mothering" or "nuturing" qualities; both the Queen of Wands and the Sow can be strong-willed and "pig-headed" at times. I had to laugh at this part of the description of the Queen of Wands in the DruidCraft book: "If she or a friend is attacked, she can be ferocious in defence." I haven't actually seen a sow defending her piglets, but I suspect she can be quite formidable when doing so.

What I take away from these two cards is the importance of balancing strong willpower and ferocity with compassion and creativity. Before I leap into attack mode, I need to make sure I am actually being attacked, or that I actually need to defend someone or something. The Sow, with its strong Earth energy, can help balance the sometimes overly fierce reactions and responses exhibited by the Queen of Wands. The Queen's passion and confidence can be channeled in a productive, beneficial direction.

Astrology and Tarot: A Demonstration

I have been asked to demonstrate or give an example of how I use astrological associations when interpreting a Tarot card. Let's go with a simple one-card reading to answer the question: "What do I need to be aware of today?" I'm using the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck.

Before I continue, I want to mention that I am not locked into the astrological associations that I currently use, which are basically the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn associations. If you are interested in astrological associations other than those suggested by the OGD, you may want to read the posts in my Astrology and Tarot series on this blog.

The NINE OF WANDS delivers my message for today.

One of the first things I look at is the elemental association. The suit of Wands is associated with the element Fire. My key words for the element Fire include passion, enthusiasm, confidence, action, will, courage, impulsiveness, and aggressiveness. So those words are in the back of my mind as I continue to interpret the card.

According to the system I currently use, the 9 of Wands is associated with the placement of the Moon in Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a Fire sign. The Moon typically represents emotions and the subconscious. So I'm going to incorporate that into my interpretation by noting that there is an emotional or subconscious component to this card, as well as the influence of Fire.

I also consider the possibilities from a numerological perspective. I view Nines as relating to endings, growth through experience, and transformation.

The man on the Nine of Wands looks tense and wary to me. He seems to expect an attack of some sort, and is keeping his guard up. The white cloth around his head could be a bandage, indicating that he has been injured or wounded. Perhaps he has already been attacked, and anticipates more of the same.

I have asked the cards what I need to be aware of today. In my experience, the cards usually bring to mind more questions than they answer, but that can be quite useful.

I look at the Nine of Wands and ask myself what I have in common with the man on the card? Am I expecting adversity today? Have I overlooked something that I need to be prepared for? Am I in danger of being blindsided by an attack or challenge I don't expect?

I might also ask myself if I am hurting emotionally from something (the Moon) and therefore wary of being hurt again? Am I feeling vulnerable (the Moon), or do I feel confident that I can handle whatever comes my way (Sagittarius)? Do I need to explore or identify subconscious fears and suspicions (the Moon) that may affect my self-confidence or optimism (Sagittarius)? How will today's experience help me grow, allowing me to end a current cycle and move forward (Nine)?

As the day unfolds, the precise meaning of this card may become clearer to me.

BASIC INFORMATION

The creator of this deck is Mickie Mueller, an award-winning artist of fantasy, fairy, and myth. You can see some of her artwork on her website at www.mickiemuellerart.com .

In her Introduction to the 288-page book that accompanies the deck, Mueller tells us of her long-standing spiritual connection to trees. She writes that her purpose in designing the Voice of the Trees oracle "was to share the Celtic tree ogham with modern practitioners of various earth spirituality paths and cartomancers, as well as those who wish to more deeply explore their Celtic heritage."

I especially like the part where Mueller talks about the pronunciation of the word "ogham." She writes: "augum, oh-am, oh-gum, oh-yam, and ach-ham, among others; all are valid, depending on whether you ask someone from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, or the many regions therein." Before, I was always worried that I was pronouncing it "wrong." Now I know that's nearly impossible to do. No matter how I pronounce it, it will be "right" to some and "wrong" to others.

The Bibliography in the back of the book provides a long list of resources that can be used to learn more about Celtic lore, mythology, and history. At the very end, Mueller directs us to the website for Trees for Life, a charity working to help restore the Caledonian Forest.

In the Field Guide section, we are given a great deal of information about each of the 25 ogham fews (letters, symbols) that Mueller has chosen for this oracle. For each we are given a Celtic Name (with pronunciation!), Letter, Status (Chieftain, Peasant, or Shrub), Divining Charm, Divinatory Meaning, Reversed Meaning, Symbolism and Lore, and a Field Guide describing the tree in detail.

The cards themselves have the name of the few at the top and key words at the bottom. The images incorporate human beings and animals as well as trees. In Mueller's words, "In doing this, I wanted to show that our interaction with the trees is important, and also to make each card more intuitive so that when you look at each one, the image triggers an emotional response, telling you the story of what the card means."

For example, the keywords for Beith / Birch are Growth and Beginnings. On the card we see birch trees and "a boy of a Celtic tribe, his pony packed with birch saplings." The boy wears "green and yellow, the colors of spring and growth." He is heading out to plant the saplings. The keywords for Saille / Willow are Intuition and The Unseen. On that card we see a priestess blessing a scrying bowl of water beneath a willow tree on a full moon night. The owl flying by is "a sacred symbol of the wisdom of the White Goddess."

In the chapter on Ogham Tree Magic, Mueller includes spells for healing, finding the answer to a question, protection, bringing love, prosperity, unlocking your success, and healing the earth.

The final pages of the book include write-ups on three related Llewellyn books: The Healing Power of Trees by Sharlyn Hidalgo, Flower and Tree Magic by Richard Webster, and Whispers from the Woods by Sandra Kynes.

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The 4-1/2" by 2-3/4" cards are printed on laminated, typical Tarot card stock. A tan border runs around the cards, and on that border are printed the name of the tree and the key words associated with that card. Those who like to remove the borders from their cards will lose the tree names and key words.

On the backs of the 25 cards we see a circular figure known as Fionn's Window or Fionn's Shield, surrounded by a Celtic knot tree depicted in its four seasons.

Fionn's Window is a mandala-like diagram found in the Book of Ballymot, from the 14th century.

The 288-page book is a 5" x 8" paperback, with full illustrations of the cards in black and white. I like the way the book is organized and appreciate the wealth of information therein. On the front of the book, a female Celtic warrior poses with Fionn's Shield.

ART

Mueller works by hand in a mixed media of watercolor and colored pencil. You may have seen her art before in divination decks (The Well Worn Path, The Hidden Path) or in Llewellyn's Magical Almanac, Witchcraft & Wicca Magazine, The Witches' Voice, and Magickal Light Magazine, and on the covers of various new age and occult publications. The art on the Voice of the Trees cards is realistic, colorful yet soft in tone.

Mueller tells us that for each card, she used "a bit of a botanical sample from the corresponding tree. . . in a magical infusion" that was then mixed with her watercolor paints.

BOTTOM LINE

This deck and book set makes a good showing alongside similar decks such as Liz and Colin Murray's Celtic Tree Oracle (St. Martin's Press) and The Green Man Tree Oracle by John Matthews and Will Worthington (Barnes & Noble Books). Of the three, Mueller's is the only deck in which the art features human beings and animals as well as trees. This is not ideal if you prefer to meditate strictly on the image of a tree. However, I really like this aspect of the Voice of Trees cards. I am looking forward to using my tree-only cards to augment readings with the Voice of Trees.

The background material in the 288-page Voice of the Trees Companion is impressive and, as John Michael Greer has said, "capably researched and sensitively rendered." I have not personally tried the Tree Magic spells described in the book, but I like the idea of using the cards in rituals such as those included by Mueller.

Tarot Cards: The High Priestess, Twos of all suits

Writing about the occult meaning of numbers, Paul Foster Case gives the following keywords for Two: "duplication, reflection, receptivity, dependence, alternation, antagonism, and the like." (The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages, Macoy Publishing Company)

THE HIGH PRIESTESS (Trump Two): In his book Numerology: Key to the Tarot (Whitford Press), Sandor Konraad writes that Arcanum II, The High Priestess, represents our attempts to cope with the duality in our nature, a conflict between masculine and feminine drives or between reason and emotion. Notice that on the Rider-Waite-Smith High Priestess card, we see two pillars behind The High Priestess: one dark and one light.

TWOS: In the Tarot, Twos combine the numerological meanings of the number Two with the characteristics of their suit or elemental association.

Konraad writes that in the Minor Arcana, the number Two represents Conflict. He notes that the Two of Coins represents "Conflict in money matters."

In general, I find that limiting the suit of Pentacles (Coins) to money matters is a bit too restrictive. Using my keywords, the Two of Pentacles suggests relationships, harmony, unity, and/or balancing polarities (Two) in the physical, material realm -- including finances, values, domestic life, work, and health (Pentacles).

An Interview with the Cat's Eye Tarot

The Management (aka my five cats) had a meeting and decided one of them should interview the fabulous font of felinity known as the Cat's Eye Tarot.* (To read my review of this deck, click HERE.)

The Management

As their servant, I naturally agreed to their plan. They elected the lovely Karma (aka Karmalita, Kars, or Karsby) to conduct the interview. They also stated that they would not require my presence during the interview, and that they would arrange for the interview to be transcribed and delivered to me at their convenience.

On the day of the interview, I kept out of sight. Scratching sounds accompanied by bumping noises and hissing suggested that the Cat's Eye representative had arrived. I now give you the transcript provided by my cats...

How would you describe your essence or essential energy?

THE FOOL

I'm always willing to take a leap of faith, to begin an adventure, to follow wherever my curiosity leads me. And you'll notice that I do not have a silly little dog nipping at my heels. That's just not going to happen. I eat silly little dogs for breakfast.

Which card do you feel reflects my human's essence or essential energy?

PAGE OF SWORDS

Well, let's see. According to the Purrsonality Types created by Dr. Givin, your human is type CADV -- Cautious, Aloof, Defiant, and Vocal. I bet she tries to boss you around a lot. I do appreciate that she is young at heart and someone who uses the mind she was given.

What story do you hope to tell my human?

THE CHARIOT

I hope to tell your human a story of success through willpower, self-assertion, and self-control. As any cat worth his or her salt will agree, it's about taking the reins of your life, taking responsibility, and taking charge of the direction in which your life is going.

What should my human not expect from you?

THE MAGICIAN

She should not expect me to perform magic (although I can, of course, and I will -- at my own discretion). My thoughts: I am impressed by the fact that four of the five cards in this reading are Major Arcana cards. This tells me that The Cat's Eye Tarot and I have an opportunity to explore important spiritual matters together, and to increase understanding of the spiritual realm. (I especially like the fact that The Magician closely resembles Karma...)

As for the CADV designation... um... No comment.

Journey through My Decks: Ace of Swords

In this series of posts, I plan to discuss all of the Tarot cards in order, using a different deck for each card. Today I'm exploring the ACE OF SWORDS from Tarot of the Hidden Folk by Giacinto Gaudenzi published by Lo Scarabeo).

Ace of Swords

(Root of the Powers of Air)

This is the vital cold current which

transports nourishment, seeds, pollen, ideas.

The LWB for this deck tells us that the Root of Air "concerns psycho-physical health and spiritual well-being." Also called "the Force of Eternal Wind," the Ace of Swords represents "the breath which gives form to every word and thought."

Like all Swords cards in this deck, the Ace has a pale blue background, a color commonly associated with the element Air. Swords take various forms in this deck B a cutlass, a dagger, or a straight sword like the one on the Ace.

The first thing I notice about this sword is that the tip has broken off, and there are a few nicks in the blade. According to Jack Tresidder in his Dictionary of Symbols (Chronicle Books), a broken sword can represent failure. This seems like an odd interpretation for a card like the Ace of Swords, especially when the card also features a butterfly (rebirth) and a vine (regeneration). In my Tarot system, the Ace of any suit suggests a beginning, a fresh start, the core or vital energy of the suit, potential, and opportunity. Why, then, would the sword on the Ace be broken?

The sword is missing its point, which brings to mind the expression "missing the point." Is it possible that the broken sword tip on this card is encouraging us to make sure we "get the point" of an idea or undertaking before we embark on a new venture? Or could it imply that we may not "get the point" of something until we get farther along the path? I also get a sense that perhaps we are being shown that a sword doesn't have to be brand new, shiny, and smooth in order for it to be useful. Book T* notes that the Ace of Swords represents "strength through trouble."

A Reading with the Playing Card Oracles Deck

I was so enthralled with the reading method described in The Playing Card Oracles by Ana Cortez, I immediately wanted to do a practice reading for myself using the Playing Card Oracles Divination Deck by Ana Cortez and C.J. Freeman (U.S. Games Systems, Inc.)

Ana graciously agreed to review what I did and offer suggestions and comments that would help me benefit even more from this reading.

Below is my reading, followed by Ana's comments. Thank you so much, Ana, for taking the time to do this! I know my blog readers will find it useful!

In her book, Ana Cortez rightfully asserts that her method of card reading "is not meant to be mastered in a short period of time."

I make no claim to having "mastered" this method. I consider this reading to be part of the "practice, practice, practice" also advised by Ana Cortez.

The purpose of this four-card spread -- called The Present Spread -- is to provide a "snapshot" of the time at hand as well as the four weeks to come. My question is: What do I need to understand about my jewelry-making business now and in the next four weeks?

Following the instructions in The Playing Card Oracles book, I shuffled the cards and turned four of them over, as if turning a book page -- in other words, NOT by flipping them head over tail, as is commonly done when playing card games. Cortez writes that "Flipping negates the nature of the deck as a book and reverses the original direction of the card, potentially altering the way the card is read."

Position 1: The Head Position (ruled by the suit of Diamonds)
THREE OF HEARTS (The Clutch)

Note: This position tends to dominate the general character of the reading. It takes on additional significance when the question refers to finances, self-esteem, or creativity -- or questions specifically related to the head and face.

I have drawn the Three of Hearts in this position. This position is ruled by Diamonds. When Diamonds are paired with Hearts, the result is often unpredictable energy or a lack of self-restraint.

Threes suggest that things are fluctuating and unstable. It may be time to make a choice or consider an opportunity. I am being encouraged to tune in more closely to my personal goals and where I want to go with my jewelry-making business. The suit of Hearts tells me that emotions play a large role here. I need to understand what my emotional needs are and whether those are being served by my current approach. Am I just adding emotional drama and stress to my life?

I confess that the illustration on this card is a bit puzzling to me. On the card I see three connected hearts, a single heart with a keyhole, and a fragmented heart. There are a total of FIVE Hearts on the card, yet the card is the THREE of Hearts.

Position 2: The Throat Position (ruled by the suit of Clubs)
TWO OF HEARTS (The Lovers)

Note: The card in this spot usually refers to ideas and communications. This can include legal documents and other written or verbal agreements. It also relates to social relationships.

I have drawn the Two of Hearts in this position. This position is ruled by the suit of Clubs. Hearts paired with Clubs can suggest a fertile imagination and strong creative ability.

The number Two indicates an initial exploration outside of ourself, taking into account both self and "the other." It can suggest partnership and cooperation or opposition and division. As mentioned above, the suit of Hearts indicates emotional involvement. The illustration depicts what Cortez calls "a heartfelt entanglement" of some sort, not necessarily limited to male/female lovers. Am I being encouraged to consider a partnership with someone else?

Position 3: The Torso Position (ruled by the suit of Hearts)
NINE OF SPADES (The Throne of Spiders)

Note: This position includes the heart, solar plexus, womb, and sexual organs. Therefore, it relates to questions of love, reproduction, and emotions in general. Hidden, unconscious issues may appear in this position, or it may refer to questions about one's mother. Health, vitality, and healing are also included. This position is also likely to reveal the "heart" of the matter.

I have drawn the Nine of Spades in this position. This position is ruled by the suit of Hearts. Hearts and Spades are called "The Gravitational Partnership." Paired with each other, they can indicate security and dependability.

Nines often speak of endings, final trials, or the last stages of something. There is a sense that moderation is lacking. We are moving at full tilt through the passageway between the pips and the court cards. Nines are occasionally seen to represent people themselves, typically young people.

With the Nine of Spades, we are looking at something that has gotten way out of hand, especially in a physical or material sense. Energy and resources are being drained and depleted. There is a sense of overwork, burden, or even addiction/co-dependence.

I'm speechless at this point. I have invested a lot of money and time into my jewelry-making business. Is this card saying that I have wasted enough money and time on the enterprise and that I should let it go? Or is there a way to "cut the load" without dumping it altogether? What is it that is actually burdening me? The feeling that I *need* to make money with the jewelry or the desire to create the jewelry in the first place? And what do I make of the Hearts/Spades partnership?

Position 4: The Foot Position (ruled by the suit of Spades)
EIGHT OF SPADES (Field of Stone)

Note: This position corresponds to the most practical, fundamental areas of life. This might include housing, possessions, career, daily routines, and living habits. One's father is also a possible subject for this position.

This position is ruled by Spades, and I have I have drawn the Eight of Spades here. This is somewhat comforting. Spades can carry largely negative (or negative-seeming) energy, and the Eight of Spades has a history of being considered a card of ill omen (the unluckiest card in the deck). It can suggest difficult karma, obstacles, bad timing, a threat -- or a need to wait and rethink strategies. The fact that my card is dignified in this position does offer a wee bit of hope, but not a lot.

The Foot Position makes me think of the expression "the bottom line." It seems to me that the Eight of Spades is pointing out that my timing is terrible in this case, and that I need to hold off on further expansion until the timing is better. The figure on this card is helpless, tied to a rock. Circumstances (the economy, for example) are beyond my control.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

The reading contains two Red (Heart) cards and two Black (Spades), suggesting a balance of energy. Hearts and Spades are called "The Gravitational Partnership," which indicates security, dependability, practicality, and traditional values. All of this seems encouraging.

GEOMANTIC CALCULATION

Geomancy by Number

The "First Witness" (geomancy by number) indicates the beginning stages of the situation.

The pattern created with the asterisks above is called AMISSIO, ruled by Venus. It represents "A loss. Diminishing. That which is taken or given away. Emptying out. Shedding an 'old skin.' Letting go." Interestingly, in astrology the planet Venus rules jewelry.

Geomancy by Color

This "Second Witness" (geomancy by color) corresponds to the unfolding of circumstances as time progresses.

The total value of the red cards in this reading is 5, an odd number. Therefore, the red cards will be represented by a single asterisk. The black cards will be represented by two asterisks (even).

The pattern created with these asterisks is called FORTUNA MINOR (ruled by the Sun). It represents "Lesser fortune. Exterior protection. Help from outside. Not very positive."

We now combine the testimony of the two "Witnesses" to determine a "Judge."

The Judge is CONJUNCTIO (ruled by Mercury), representing "Connection. The lost being found. Relationship. Contracts. Agreements. Negative coming together with negative. Positive coming together with positive. Generally considered a neutral figure."

Overall, I don't get positive vibes from these cards concerning the matter in question. There seems to be a lot of loss here and almost no encouragement on the horizon. At the same time, the bigger picture shown by the Gravitational Partnership of the Hearts and Spades could suggest that I might be okay if I just "hold steady" right now rather than completely discontinuing the jewelry business. The outlook for the next four weeks isn't good, but the Judge does offer a small amount of encouragement that things may eventually improve.

Let's see what Ana Cortez says about my trial run with her deck:

"Hi Zanna,

Very ambitious and precise with your information I see here. Good job on many counts! I do SO appreciate the recent attention you have given to my work :-)

So regarding your reading. Yes, I see that this is in no way time for expansion, as you yourself surmised. The 8 of Spades being dignified in the Spade position, as you mentioned, gives this card greater gravity and power and always when you push forward with this card you will encounter only obstacles. And so magnified for you in regard to everything most practical. That being said... I would surrender instead to stillness and see what opens up for you in your heart.

There is beautiful heart energy nurturing this reading but it is floating around at the top of the spread. We are going to bring it DOWN. :-) EVENTUALLY :-) So... the lovers being in the thinking and mental position tells me that you have a dream of absolute devotion to your work, so I would spend some quiet time and ask your heart what it would like in your creative life. Put your hand over your heart and whisper the question directly to it :-) Then listen!!! Write it down, so your head is in sync with your heart.

There is something on it's way out, as witnessed by the 9 in the heart position, so dream with your heart as to what you would like to come to you next. As you mentioned, the three is begging direction and manifestion, and it is the governing energy of this reading (top position). A challenging influence. Again, once you tune in to your heart and ask it what IT wants, new directions will open up for you.

BASIC INFORMATION

The creator of this deck is Debra M. Givin, DVM, who has been a practicing veterinarian for 28 years, 22 of them in an exclusively feline practice. In her Introduction to the Little White Book (LWB), Givin writes: "For me, the tarot has become a tool for reflection and a way to think through a situation."

Many of the images on the cards are compatible with the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith interpretations. For example, on the Four of Pentacles, a cat has one mouse in its mouth and is holding down three others with its paws, as if hoarding them. The Magician is surrounded by symbols of the four elements: in this case, a fish (Water), a lizard (Fire), a bird (Air), and a mouse (Earth).

I love what Givin has done with the Aces. On the Ace of Swords, we see a cat's paw swiping at a feather that has fallen from a white bird on a perch. On the Ace of Cups we see a cat's paw through the glass of a goldfish bowl. On the Ace of Pentacles, a paw grabs a mouse's tail. On the Ace of Wands, a paw reaches toward a snake.

The LWB provides several keywords and a description for each card, along with how it might be interpreted in a reading. The keywords follow the RWS tradition as interpreted by Joan Bunning in her book Learning the Tarot. For example, the keywords for the Seven of Cups are "wishful thinking; options; dissipation." The keywords for The Tower are "sudden change; release; downfall; revelation."

In the back of the LWB is a Nine Lives Spread based on the old proverb: "A cat has nine lives: 3 he plays, 3 he strays, and 3 he stays." Nine cards are drawn -- three for "Youth", three for "Mid-Life," and three for "Maturity."

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The cards measure 2.75" x 4.75" and are printed on glossy stock the same weight as most of my Tarot decks. There is a white border around the images on both the front and back sides. Card titles are printed in black on a pale yellow bar under the card image. Major Arcana cards are numbered, with Strength as Trump 8 and Justice as Trump 11. The image on the backs of the cards is a close-up of a long-haired, green-eyed tabby cat's face. If you use reversals, you'll be able to identify reversed cards by noting which way the image on the back faces.

ART

The art is realistic, with a soft, gentle quality that emphasizes the grace and beauty of the cats. Purple is a prominent color on most Major Arcana cards. Wands cards have orange backgrounds (representing creative energy); the Wands cats are ginger tabbies. Swords cards feature shades of blue (intellectual energy) and Siamese cats (some appear to have long hair, which would make them Himalayans or Balinese). Pentacles cards have a lot of earthy green and brown, and feature brown tabby cats. For the suit of Cups, Givin has chosen to depict black and white cats against a red background, representing emotional energy. Many of the Wands cards incorporate reptiles. Cups cards often include fish. Pentacles cards incorporate mice, and Swords cards include birds. These creatures are the cat's natural prey, as well as being associated with the four elements.

The Court Cards are lovely, with kittens as Pages, young adult cats as Knights, and adult cats as Queen and King. As a long-time cat lover, I am delighted with the way Givin has captured the many moods of cats -- contemplative, curious, playful, alert, threatening, frightened, relaxed, and affectionate (to name a few).

BOTTOM LINE

If you dislike themed decks or cat decks, this is not the deck for you. I feel that it does incorporate a fair amount of the traditional card meanings, but it is certainly not an RWS "clone." As Givin notes: "There are few, if any, esoteric symbols." I think anyone who enjoys cat-themed decks will find these cards a pleasure to work with. Because each suit has a consistent color scheme, the reader can quickly identify the dominant energy in a reading. I, for one, am pleased to add it to my family of feline Tarot cards. Givin advises us to "let these cats guide you as you use the tarot to learn about yourself and your cat." I look forward to doing just that.

An Interview with the Crystal Visions Tarot

Following my review of the Crystal Visions Tarot, I decided to interview the deck about our future together.

I was not surprised when The Unknown Card arrived to act as spokesperson for the deck. I was fascinated by her eye makeup, her crystal ball, and her purple nail polish. She had a raven with her.

"I love your dress," I said. It was deep purple, and looked exactly like the dress I wore at my wedding 11 years ago!

"Thank you," she said in a low, husky voice. "I understand you have some question for me?"

I poured us each a glass of red wine, and began the interview.

(1) How would you describe your essence or essential energy?
KNIGHT OF WANDS
I am summer and heat and light. I am motion and passion and confidence. I can sweep you off your feet and take you on great adventures. I dare you to travel faster and farther than ever before. I am charming and arrogant and honest to a fault -- and I may not be overly concerned with your feelings.

(2) Which card do you feel reflects my essence or essential energy?
THE MAGICIAN
Of course you are The Magician. Who else? You can harness and command the emotional, physical, mental, and creative energy depicted on my cards. You have acces to Air, Water, Fire, and Earth -- and to the vast, sweeping Spirit of the Major Arcana.

According to that 1970s song by Three Dog Night, "One is the loneliest number." I can testify that it does feel a bit lonely here at Tarot Notes, now that Helen, my blog partner of three years, has retired from Tarot blogging.

Fortunately, One is also the number of new beginnings and fresh starts, so for my first post as a solo Tarot blogger, I'm going to initiate a new series called Numerology and Tarot. I shall do it in a fiercely independent manner, while demonstrating impressive leadership skills. Read on.

In Astrology, the First House is the House of Self, Self-Image, and Self-Interest. It's all about ME. The first sign of the zodiac, Aries (a cardinal fire sign), is known for fierce independence, leadership, and taking initiative. Yeah, they can be bossy and arrogant, too.

Writing about the occult meaning of numbers, Paul Foster Case gives the following key words for One: "beginning, initiative, originality, unity, singleness, isolation, and the like." He also writes that "This is the consciousness of the true Self or I AM. . . the essence, substance, energy and consciousness expressed in all forms." (The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages. Macoy Publishing Company)

In Numerology, the number One is associated with leadership, the ability to stand alone, independence, and self-assurance, along with less desirable traits like egotism and impatience.

Aces are typically seen to represent new beginnings, and certainly the number One can be said to rule beginnings. However, when interpreting an Ace, we need to take into account other traits associated with that number, such as those listed above.

THE MAGICIAN (Trump 1): It is easy to see the astrological and numerological traits of the number One in this card. In decks based on the RWS tradition, The Magician stands alone with all elements at his command.

ACES: Aces combine the numerological meaning of the number One with the characteristics of their suit or elemental association. Using my keywords, we are looking at independence, beginnings, and/or purposeful behavior in the area represented by the specific suit or element.

For example, with the Ace of Cups or Chalices (Water), I begin by looking at independence, beginnings, and/or purposeful behavior in the area of emotions, the subconscious, and relationships.

Next time, we'll look at the number Two. According to the Three Dog Night song, it's "the loneliest number since the number One." Stay tuned.

BASIC INFORMATION

Artist Jennifer Galasso tells us that the name Crystal Visions Tarot was inspired by singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks' CD “Crystal Visions,” released around the same time that Galasso was planning the deck. An "About Jennifer Galasso" card packaged with the deck provides a considerable amount of information about the artist.

In addition to the standard 78 cards, which are based on the Rider-Waite-Smith system, the Crystal Visions Tarot deck includes The Unknown Card. According to the "little white book" (LWB) that accompanies the deck, this card represents "an answer that's not yet meant to be revealed."

The LWB provides an Introduction to the deck along with descriptions and divinatory meanings for each card, including meanings for reversed cards. I am impressed with the amount and value of the material in this LWB. We are given the usual DMs but we are also given insight into the reasoning behind the depiction of the characters on the cards. For example, the description of The World includes: "The characters depicted in this card sits on top of the world in the lotus pose. She appears to be meditating, listening to the hum of the universe. She wears a necklace with the Hindu symbol 'Om' symbolizing the most perfect integration of mind, body and spirit."

APPEARANCE, SIZE, QUALITY

The cards are 2.75" by 4.75" in size and printed on reasonably sturdy, glossy stock similar to other decks I own. There is a 1/4" border on both sides. The backs are lovely shades of lavender and mauve, with a crystal ball in the center and a delicate pattern of purple-mauve roses. Symbols for the four elements are also incorporated into the design. ART

The colors on these cards are soft yet vivid. The images have a distinctly fantasy feel. The characters primarily consist of broad-shouldered, well-proportioned men and beautiful, slender women with long, flowing hair. These ethereal images are pleasing to the eye in both color and style.

Each suit has its own consistent color scheme, inspired by the element associated with that suit. The Cups cards feature violet and magenta backgrounds; the card titles are black on a pinky lavender bar. Swords cards are indigo and lavender, with the titles written on a lavender-blue bar. Pentacles cards are shades of green and brown, with the titles written on a pale olive-green bar. Wands cards are orange-red and maroon, with the titles written on what I would call a rosy beige bar. The artist's "cool" and "warm" palettes make it easy to recognize the elemental associations in any given spread.

The World

The symbolism on the cards also ties in nicely with elemental associations. For example, the moon appears in in various phases on all of the Cups (Water) cards. Lions and dragons appear on many of the Wands (Fire) cards. Birds or butterflies appear on most of the Swords (Air) cards. Trees and plants dominate the scenes on the Pentacles (Earth) cards.

The colors of the Majors are not as clearly linked to the elements, although fiery colors do dominate The Sun, The Emperor, and Strength. Most of the other Majors are predominantly purple, violet, orchid, and magenta.

BOTTOM LINE

King of Wands

This deck is likely to appeal to readers who prefer traditional RWS titles and symbolism, but also like to work with cards that feature romantic, fantasy-style art suggestive of the Faerie realm. The level of detail in the images encourages closer study of the cards, yet is not overwhelming. Although the characters are not people you are likely to see in your everyday life, many of them are approachable and engaging. The Unknown Card may not appeal to everyone, but you don't have to use it if you don't like it. I recommend meditating on The Unknown Card before shuffling and drawing cards from this deck for a reading.
